Hi

I'm thinking of getting a headset and was after opinions on what to get.

As most of my gaming now comes later on at night, after the wife and baby have gone to bed, i've been thinking that some headphones would help to enjoy the game more. My surround sound has become pretty pointless when you have to keep it on really low.

I'm not massively bothered about the ingame chat although it could be nice to have every now and again. I'm wondering if its worth just getting some good headphones or a proper headset and if there's any difference in the quality? I'd only be using it for the PS3 so im not fused about compatibility issues.

I'd rather avoid spending a fortune but I appreciate quality matters. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks

I was in the same boat as you are now. I used my home cinema but it kept the wife and kids awake so I bought a proper headset for gaming late at night. Turtlebeach or Tritton headsets are worth a look. some have 5.1/7.1 surround sound.

I've got a pair of Turtle Beach X11s. Really good investment, great audio quality and really good in party chats aswell.

I know you stated you didnt want to spend a fortune, but the Playstation Pulse headset is regarded as the best out there.

Must admit that the Sony Pulse Elite Edition headset does look good. Expensive but good!

The problem i always have is that i always push my budget limit. Really didnt want to spend anywhere near that but i get over tempted with quality.

I have to say - I have a Turtle Beach PX21 (for use when I play my 360), and I like it. The only problem is that there's cables EVERYWHERE when I use it.

I'm going PS4 only soon, and I gather that the Pulse will get a patch to make it compatible with that, so I'll be getting it soon.

Are you upgrading to next gen?

Do you console game or PC?

Wireless or Wired headphones?

I bought some turtle beach call of duty KILO (wired) headphones which I set up on a splitter so I got TV/Xbox/PS3 going through them.

I dont use the chat features, well not yet anyway but got them for the same reason as you!
My wife hated the constant gun fire and explosions I had going through the surround sound so for some marital peace I bought those headphones at a cheap price, best decision EVER!

You dont need to go to the expense of these types headphones as you can get other brands (not gaming specific) as all you want is audio.

Not a fan of wireless as the battery is internal which obviously needs recharging as oppsoed to having a long cable drag over the floor.(not much better)

Would suggest looking around, to see what suits you but non gaming specific headphones are much cheaper than gamer specific.

Will no doubt be getting a PS4. Think i'll hold off for a while on it and gauge my opinion once it's settled in, probably middle of next year.

Just PS3.

Not really bothered to be honest. Would need a fairly long wire but for the amount that i'd use it being wired wouldnt be a deal breaker.

All the shops i've been to so far only have a limited selection and they've all been sealed in plastic so cant get a good idea of what theyre like. May have to take a trip down to the big Currys and PC World and see what theyve got.

Saw that the Sony Pulse will be compatible with the PS4 which would be handy.

Sony Pulse have a great reputation but also a few dodgy reviews due to design flaws.(plastic cracking, cables battery issues etc)

There will be a patch to get them to work on PS4, not sure whether that will be on day one or not though.

My Turtle beach headphones have a massive long cable and are able to be put away easily.

Iv had both wireless and wired but always seem to go back to wired, less to go wrong and much cheaper.

Have you tried going into Game? They have loads of models (I work for Game) if you dont like the headphones you can always take them back.

Yeah had a look in the store in town but it isnt the biggest so had a limited selection. Im leaning a bit towards the turtle beach px21 or even px22s. some decent prices for them out there.

TB's are quite good and i'd recommend them. I have a set of x41's and can and do, use them for far more than just gaming. TV, movies and music

I'd get the Sony Pulse headset, i've heard good things about it, both reviews online and by my friends. I'm actually going to purchase a pair soon, might wait till the PS4/PS4 headset equivalent (not the one that comes with it, that's only a single IEM) comes out so it might be cheaper.

But its 7.1 surround sound and has voice chat and its also future proof, it will definitely work with the PS4, unlike some of the other headsets.

Realised the the TB px21 is not ps4 compatible yet the px22 is. Probably explains why the px21 is going cheap. The added cost now shortens the cost to the Sony pulse so even more tempted to go for that now.

I was going to open a thread on this subject but since this one asks nearly the same question, I may as well just post here. After getting into GTA Online quite a bit lately, I have felt that I am missing out a bit by not having a headset and hence not being able to communicate with other players. However, I do have a great surround sound system that I still want to use and DO NOT want the headset to replace that. Hence I really only want the headset for the mic and am perfectly happy with the audio from the speakers as normal. I am not keen on the in-ear type but like the look of the headphone type ones where the cup covers one ear with just a band around the head to keep it steady.

As I don't need it for listening and only want it for the mic I would want something very cheap ideally, but still good enough to pick up my voice at acceptable quality. Wireless would be a plus, though could do without it in the interests of cost.

Only needs to work with PS3 (but if it is compatible with other systems that's a bonus).

I really am a novice when it comes to headsets so any recommendations appreciated!

Reading more and more into this is making it harder to choose. Realise that the ps4 controller comes with a 3.5 jack so could get away with any headphones once I get a ps4. Rather than pay 100 for decent headphones I could put it towards a ps4.

I'm trying to be sensible and hold off getting a ps4 but these things aren't helping.
