Is Louis becoming *gasp* this season's best mentor?
None of the boys have been in the Bottom 2.
Really good song choices, generally speaking. Hasn't relied on big production numbers, letting the personality and voice (or lack of them, depends on what you think) take the lead. Thoughts? |

I agree. Louis will be the last mentor to lose an act he will have all his acts until the top 7 at least.

This series I think is Louis to lose at this point
Gary is doing some weird ass stuff with the groups - destoying Rough Copy and giving Kingsland Road the same performance three weeks on the trot. Nicole has Abi who is going to be slated until she goes, Hannah who is clearly not as popular as 1st thought and Tamera who is having her fair share of media hate. Sharon has now 1 act left and whilst she can sing is about as marketable as a tin of sick. Louis has covered all his bases with his 3 acts and is playing a blinder this year! |

I don't think you should necessarily give Louis the credit for the hard work and success of his acts. I'm not convinced we can even give him the credit for choosing them as I'm sure the show tells him who to pick.
He's been lucky IMO. The category that so many people claimed was the weakest has turned out to be pretty unbreakable so far, but I don't think that is any thanks to Louis, who I doubt does more than turn up for filming each week. |

Nicole is doing well with Hannah (despite the B2 appearance) and Tamera, but really poorly with Abi (accidentally on purpose? idk that's not the point).
Gary has never been good with picking songs for his acts. His Boys never stood a chance in tapping into their inner star (not that they have star quality) and his Overs reeked of being forgettable (except Christopher who turns everything into cheese). Sharon is playing it safe with Sam Bailey and this will bite her in the ass soon. I think it's more that Louis picked the right acts (don't underestimate a guy who got his first good hand in 8 years) because Nicholas's songs are irrelevant (he will get the votes anyway) and Sam's songs aren't exactly wow. His strong point is Luke but apparently, he didn't even choose Seal this week (Luke did, according to the TV). That said, I think he's a close second to Nicole as best mentor this year. I want all the Boys to go far, though. They're more interesting than Gary's lot. |

i think luke friend is shaping up to be the dark horse tbh. i would like to see him do well.
sam c's dire though, and though nicholas is quite a good singer he's somehow simultaneously dull and annoying. he'll get mostly mum/granny votes, but he'll have competition for them from sam bailey....with sam callahan it's a question of how far his looks can take him, because everything else is seriously lacking. |

Louis made an interesting point on The Xtra Factor when people seemed surprised at how well he is doing, when he said that he's almost always given the worst catagory. In fact, the only other time he was in charge of a good catagory he won.
The guy clearly knows his s*** to have gotten where he is, but he usually doesn't have much talent to work with. But even when he has the "joke" acts, he usually ends up with the biggest talking points of the season (thinking Jedward and Kitty, although Kitty being a "joke" act was a bit unfair on her, I felt). I've said it many times, but by allowing, promoting and downright encouraging joke acts, Louis has always shown that he's the one who understands what makes good TV the most out of all the judges. And when he's given a great group to mentor (although I still massively disagree with him having Callahan over Paul) he can get down to business and do the music side of it well, too. So I'm not surprised at all by how well he's doing. Although the cynic in me thinks that they gave him the strongest group purely because he has been vocal about wanting to leave this year, so if/when he wins (going on the way votes have traditionally gone in the show over the last ten years I don't see anyone other than Nicholas winning) he'll decide to stay and be back doing the worst catagory/best TV next year. |

I think Louis does a lot backstage. The producers wanted him to be the joker of the pack and pick silly acts deliberately - it's all scripted

Lets not forget that at this point last year, Tulisa was the only judge who had yet to have an act appear in the bottom two. We all saw how that turned out.
Then again, she had the Girls. Her's wasn't exactly the strongest girls category that the show has ever seen , in fact they were the second weakest girls category ever, just above the one Sharon mentored in 2007. Louis has the Boys this year, a category where ate way one will be in the final even if all of the members are dire. |

Louis generally works pretty well with the boys category (remember he won it the only previous year he had it, and I think he's got a genuine shot of winning it again this year with Nicholas) and the group category (although he's had that one so many times that some years have been more of a miss than others.) It's just the overs he's hopeless with.

I've always said Louis is one of the best mentors and he knows exactly what he's doing. Why do you think he's still there after 10 years?
When he's given a good act, he knows exactly what to do with them (see G4, JLS, Shayne, 2 of the most successful post-X Factor acts and a series winner) in addition to the likes of Jedward and Wagner, who were the main talking points of their years. He was also apparently a big help to Rebecca Ferguson. He just plays a character on X Factor and he plays it well. He knows exactly what he is doing, he isn't the bumbling old out of touch man that the producers would have us believe. |

When Louis has a good contestant he is a good mentor and he does put the effort in - JLS for example!

The boys category is by far the easiest category to have though- it simply isn't possible to mess it up, because the voters will always back them.

Personally I think it is more down to the Boys category being the safest. Remember if it weren't for Christopher Maloney we would've had an all Boys final last year.
In most series a Boy has either won or been runner up. |

Louis is now the favourite to be winning mentor with the bookies....not many would have predicted that at the start of the live shows.

I personally think the girls are standouts but whatever the boys will always dominate.

I think Louis knows what the public will vote for. He knows the show well and has picked 3 completely different acts who will all appeal to different voters. He does seem to be doing a much better job this year, but I think it's because he's been given a good category and thinks he can do well so isn't having to prepare a joke act. He did pretty well with Union J imo last year. They had good song choices, and although they ended up in the bottom a few times

Louis always knows what he's doing even with the novelty acts, he got Wagner to 6th and made Jedward into stars.
