Cider and vinegar to ease joints
pfgpowell

For the past few weeks now, I have been taking a dose of honey and cider vinegar in hot water twice a day as advised by many to ease arthritis. I don’t actually yet have arthritis, but is has most certainly been lubricating my joints and I generally feel far more limber, especially first thing in the morning. Online people claims that despite being acidic (the honey is there merely to make taking the vinegar more palatable), the cider vinegar actually makes your body and limbs ‘more alkaline’, thus dissolving the acidic crystals which build up and can cause painful joints. Perhaps, perhaps not, perhaps that’s just a lot of hooey. I don’t know. But I do know it does work and I would like to know why in scientific terms. I’m not a complete scientific dumbo – I did A level chemistry and biology – and I would like a rather more technical explanation than you get on all those Eat Yourself Healthy webites. Anyone able to help me out?

PS I take a tablespoon of honey to two tablespoons of vinegar in hot water twice a day.

An acid makes your body and limbs more alkaline? Your A Level chemistry and biology must have been very different to mine.

Build up of acid crystals. Sounds like gout to me.
There are other more scientific methods of reducing the risk of gout. Ask your GP.

No, I only mention the crystals because that is what some of the websites proclaiming vinegar and honey say. I have no idea what is going on, except that I do feel more limber. And I would like to hear more about what might be going on scientifically. Any med students here, nurses?

No, my A level wasn't any different: acid cannot make something more alkaline. Acid reacts with alkalis. I was merely quoting other websites, and because the explanations given there seem so daft, I was wondering whether anyone here know could suggest something a little more rational.

Pseudoscience probably.

(I haven't looked into it but that's what most of these types of ideas are. Otherwise why are they not remedies recommended to those really suffering or at risk of arthritis?)

Avoiding certain foods and alcohol. That's about as scientific as it gets....

But ACV is the best treatment for it should you be unfortunate enough to get gout...

Indeed that's as scientific as it gets, but there's sound research behind that. Whereas honey, vinegar and ACV...
Now if it were counter-spinning, quantum fluxed ACV...

It MIGHT be because you are putting additional acid into your body, your body decides there is far too much acid and there for gets rid of the acid crystals as well.

Though why it wouldnt just expel the Acidy stuff you have just taken first! And bearing in mind I'm no medical expert either! I'm not sure you actually get acid crystals in your joints, it was just an idea.

Just a thought though, is drinking so much vinegar good for your stomach? Again, just a thought, probs best to ask your doctor.

Do people really ask such things of their doctor these days? I don't get to see my doctor very often but would trust Google far more than a single persons opinion on things such as this.
