He was incredibly shy... Aswell as being very modest. There was an infamous quote about him being the best guitarist in the world. It was along the lines of,


"So how does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world?"

To which he replied,

"Don't know, ask Rory Gallagher".

I like rory, but I don't think he was on the level of Hendrix. I'd flip a coin between Page and Hendrix.

Looks like this is one of those apocryphal tales - he is also supposed to have said the same thing of Clapton, Phil Keaggy of Glass Harp and several others. Nobody seems to have been able to pin it down to any particular interview.
It's possible, of course. Taste played at the 1970 IOW festival, as did Hendrix.
