EE turning group messages in to SMS
SkyPlatinum

I sent a group message via my iphone to about 7 people and EE have charged me 7 x 33p basically charging me 7 picture messages. When I contacted customer services they said that over 5 messages sent as a group message get converted to a mms ( each one ) .. I was previously with three who didn't do this as far as I can recall ? Do the other networks operate this sharp practice ? EE also said that text messages over 160 characters in length get converted to MMS. I have now turned off the MMS facility off the iphone handset

I have MMS off anyway. Its always been a rip off service. It might be because not all people you were sending to have iPhones OR not everyone had a data connection at the time.

I think the EE chat is crap.

Why don't you just send photos via Viber or Whatsapp. It's free.

Firstly. From Apple.

Quote:
“Some carriers send group* SMS messages as MMS messages. Please contact your carrier for more information.

*The number of recipients allowed for a group SMS or MMS message varies from carrier to carrier. Please contact your carrier for more information.

Note: Some carriers may automatically convert long SMS messages (ones that would require multiple SMS messages to send) into MMS format.”

With slight varience O2 do it (sometimes MMS is included in tarrif), Voda do it and...

Three also state.

Quote:
“In some situations, your device will need to convert a text message into a different format. If your device says your text message is being changed to an MMS, it will be charged as a picture or video message and won’t be included in any free text allowance you have. This happens if you:

send a message that’s too long to send as a normal text message. This varies between devices and manufacturers, but most phones will let you know when you’ve gone over the text message limit

send it to an email address. If you send it to multiple people and include one as an email address, the texts to all recipients will be charged as picture messages, because phones can’t send different types of message to recipients in the same batch. It’s easy to accidentally send to an email address if you’ve synchronised your contacts with a social network like Facebook, so you should check every time

send a text message to a large number of contacts, on some devices

enter a subject line

attach anything to the text like pictures, music or other files
include images in the message, like picture icons of smiley faces.
”

Keep MMS off to be safe I suppose. I also keep "send as sms if iMessage not available" off too as I iMessage with my sister in Oz. I can wait till she has a data signal for her to receive a message.
