Very disappointing news (the bit I've emboldened rather than the bit about them planning to cover the World Series on-site), thanks for posting about it along with the rest of the information you have provided. Josh has also tweeted that USP Content and Radio 5 Live are "discussing ways for some coverage during the regular season" so it will be interesting to see if they can work something out.

I think if BBC Radio Sport needs to make cutbacks then something that is not UK-based and of minority interest like their Major League Baseball coverage will always be an obvious target to cut back on. As a regular listener over the past four years, I've come to accept that 5 Live Baseball will always (almost always rightly so) take a back seat to coverage of other sports, with it being off-air for weeks on end when Radio 5 Live Sports Extra is needed for things like Olympic Games and Wimbledon. In many ways I think fans of NFL radio coverage in the UK were fortunate that a commercial broadcaster in Absolute Radio 90s arrived with the intention to give the NFL a similar level of weekly coverage as 5LSE did at the time they did, you cannot blame the BBC for stepping aside given the circumstances, but when this happened things did not look good for the future of 5 Live Baseball. In the current climate I suppose I should be grateful that the BBC have at least committed to covering the World Series this year.

Given that Josh mentions the regular season in his tweets, I'm hoping that they are not just planning to cover the World Series in 2014 but also the earlier rounds of the MLB Playoffs, which have received really extensive coverage on 5LSE during the past two years. But I'd hope they can come to some kind of arrangement to continue 5 Live Baseball in the months prior to October too, even if it doesn't take a weekly Thursday/Sunday evening slot during the weeks when 5LSE is free. And if you gave me the choice between having on-site World Series commentaries and little else or relays of US radio commentaries on the Fall Classic with studio presentation, but with considerably more coverage of MLB games prior to the World Series, I personally would opt for the latter.

Gigi Salmon - listening to her on the tennis on 5LSX now, presenting & on commentary.

What is her background? Don't recognize the name immediately.

Gigi Salmon's quite an experienced sports broadcaster, although most of her work up until now has been in the commercial sector.

She got her first break nationally as a football and tennis reporter for talkSPORT upon its relaunch as a sports radio station at the turn of the millennium, where she also presented their Sportswatch extended sports news bulletins. Before long she began presenting on Chelsea TV, going full-time on there in 2001. She's been there ever since.

Despite her work at Stamford Bridge, she's kept her hand in with the tennis and every summer from 2003 onwards she has commentated on Wimbledon for the championships' RSL radio station, which was Radio Wimbledon and is now Live@Wimbledon. She also has a similar role at the French Open, commentating for their Radio Roland Garros service since 2010. Gigi made her BBC Radio bow back in November commentating on Radio 5 Live Sports Extra's coverage of the ATP World Tour Finals at the 02 Arena. I'm sure Shaun will be able to correct me if I'm mistaken, but I think the Indian Wells tournament will be her second tennis championship for BBC Radio after that one.

talkSPORT's reporter at Leeds Rhinos v Widnes Vikings on Friday was Richard Shaw-Wright, making his debut on the station I believe. Like Mark Wilson, he's involved in the William Hill In-Play Radio service.

Going by his Twitter, Mark Wilson has left Wish FM's rugby league coverage, where he was their Wigan Warriors commentator and also presented the Gerr'um On Side magazine show across parent company UTV Radio's stations in the North West, to become the presenter and commentator on Radio Yorkshire's RL coverage. I'm not sure if this has/will affect his Bolton Wanderers football commentaries for Tower FM or his occasional talkSPORT Super League reporting work on Friday nights, but his Twitter biography suggests he's no longer contracted to UTV Radio.

Evidently talkSPORT have been carrying updates on one game each day from the ICC World Twenty20 from the Super 10 stage onwards, with Jack Bannister reporting on England's matches and Jon Norman covering featured games on days when England didn't play. They didn't carry any updates from the preliminary group stage involving non-Test playing nations such as Ireland. I imagine they'll carry updates on both semi-finals and the final.

talkSPORT have picked up the rights to Saturday's Grand National. This will be the first time a commercial radio station has provided live commentary on the race. Rupert Bell will be commentating from Aintree from 4.15pm.

talkSPORT's programme director Liam Fisher tweeted the news:

Quote:
“Grand National live on @talkSPORT for the 1st time this Saturday afternoon. @Rupertbell calling them home...”

Sunday 30th and Monday 31st March - ESPN Radio

Kevin Winter presented Baseball Tonight from the Bristol, Connecticut studios

Major League Baseball: National League
Los Angeles Dodgers @ San Diego Padres (Sunday, 8pm ET) - Jon Sciambi and Chris Singleton

Major League Baseball: American League
Boston Red Sox @ Baltimore Orioles (Monday, 3pm ET) - Marc Kestecher and Chris Singleton

ESPN Radio should continue with Sciambi and Singleton as the regular commentary team and Kestecher the studio host of their coverage of a Saturday 'Game of the Week' and Sunday Night Baseball starting with this weekend's coverage of the San Francisco Giants @ Los Angeles Dodgers weekend series. This week, Kestecher was on commentary duty on Monday rather than presenting duty on both days as Sciambi was needed to commentate on the Seattle Mariners @ Los Angeles Angels game for ESPN TV - one of five Opening Day games they televised live.

By the way, it is worth me pointing out that ESPN Radio's Major League Baseball coverage is available on the ESPN Radio website and on its mobile phone apps. It is not geoblocked internationally, so listeners who are in the UK or beyond can listen in (I frequently do). For those of you expecting to miss 5 Live Baseball, it is a strong alternative.
