I just get the distinct feeling it's mainly at the under 10's .....! Because most of us on here hardly get the opportunity to critique the professionalism on the show anymore, we all just stand back with our mouths wide open, trying to sift through the dross, and desperately cling on to the morsels of good DANCE entertainment so thinly spread out in the show...... Why can't the BBC go for Sophistication for once, coupled with the style and glamour Strictly should represent......!

Its aimed at family viewing...that's why it is so successful.

I have no clue.

At 58 I do know that virtually all the 'music' is unknown to me.

With all the props and stuff it's becoming more like a Morecambe and Wise sketch.

These days with televisions in every room and on iPlayer on every computer is there such a thing as "family viewing"?

I agree. Whatever they're doing, they're doing it right..2m more viewers than X-Factor.

Despite its title, it was never meant to be a serious, sophisticated show for dancing connoisseurs. It's on at 6.30pm on a Saturday evening, it has to appeal to a very wide audience. There are things I find cringeworthy, but it's difficult to fault the BBC, they created something centred around dancing that is extraordinarily popular.

I think this is exactly right. It is a broad spectrum show, a floodlight rather than a laser. It's not specifically appealing to the 13 to 21's or any other demographic but rather it is something that can be enjoyed by young children , OAP's, mature adults, young adults and adolescents alike.

Therein lies the key to it's success. Young children for example won't understand the technicalities of the dance, if that was all there was to it they would find the show to be a bit tedious, but they love the drama and funny bits, even if the trendies might find them cringeworthy. But the trendies put up with the cringeworthy bits because other parts of the show are cool and sexy.

It's a winning formula and has been for 10 years.

It's targeted at as wide an age range as possible to appeal to the family market sitting down together and watching on a Saturday night. It's an old fashioned entertainment show with a 'reality' type element thrown in.

Some of the stuff I find daft but when you're aiming for a large audience (which it successfully gets) you can't please every one with every aspect.

And so is X Factor, aimed at family viewing, but the age range is that much older on Strictly, and it would be good just to see some quality and sophistication just occasionally...........!

They're "doing it right" if their only consideration is to beat X-Factor in the ratings.

I'm only surprised they haven't yet brought in some elements of known appeal;

Cookery;
The judges could give their expert opinion on the meals prepared by contestants during training.

Houses;
"Which professional lives in a home like this" (hang on, didn't they they try that once?)

and possibly;

Animals.

That would widen its appeal and attract even more viewers.

Yes they are dreadful but then the kids do find them funny. It has lots of things to keep the whole family entertained and not just one specific for the dance purists. It would never have taken off otherwise, its cheesy in parts and there are times to go make a cuppa so its all good imo.

They all had themes. I dont care too much for ballroom on its own I'm afraid.....I need something more entertaining than that though of course a great ballroom dance can look beautiful and lift the spirits. Strictly is thankfully far more varied and its why I like it.

What was Sophie's foxtrot, Abbey's foxtrot, Natalie's quickstep etc etc if not sophistication coupled with style and glamour? The show is for "ladies, gentlemen, girls and boys" and it hits the mark every time. If it was just sophistication and glamour it would have lasted one series.

I wonder if Natalie can sing too, if so she could be headed for the West End next.....brilliant actress and a very fine dancer, I would deffo pay money to see her strutting her stuff.

Well, you're not far wrong when it comes to the VT's. Practically anything can be brought in to "improve confidence". So cooking and horse riding (haven't they already done that ?) can't be far away.
But I've got no problem with it really, it's only a couple of minutes between dances, and that's a couple of minutes less of Brucie cracking more lame jokes.

How unbelievably arrogant! I rather suspect there may be 10 million + of us out there! I really think you're in the minority.

My 4 & 6 year olds love it. My 6 yr old even plays Strictly at school and at after school club. She informs me she is always Darcy! I overheard her playing with little boy today using cars as the dancers. Ben was a great big bulldozer!! I'm just waiting for them to finish in the bath and we'll all be sat down for the results show in a bit. Really family fun guessing who will be in the DO.
