Yes, that is possible. You can use all features without any subscription, however you do need a NowTV account to set it up (but those are free).

I came here to ask exactly the same question. I have no interest in movies or sport but would love to watch iPlayer etc. on my TV without trailing my laptop wires across the room.

The NowTV web site says that you have to make a NowTV account by choosing to have either movies on demand or sport. I assume you take the free trial and then cancel them, or can you create a NowTV account without trialling the Sky stuff?

I happened to have a SkyID when I received my box so didn't have to do the signing up thing. I think you can cancel when you get to that page as the account exists at that point. If not, then the free Movies Pass trial will work, just remember to cancel it before it charges for the second month.

Funnily enough, I am with Sky for my broadband because I used to be an o2 customer BUT, they haven't migrated my account over yet so although it's Sky who send me an email with the amount of my bill, if I want to log in and see the bill details, I have to log into the o2 site. All very confusing as I wanted to buy BT Sport for my husband and that involved buying a Freesat from Sky card. I fell between the two and it caused a bit of confusion at their call centre.

The NowTV will be for my mother who has Freesat+ through a Humax box but not a smart TV. She doesn't want to watch iPlayer on her laptop so I thought this might be ideal for her.

I just created a account on the Now TV website, then used it to log into my account via the box, watching the free stuff,no problem, never went near the pay content,so never had to remember to cancel it.
You may have to wait a little while for the box to respond to the log in,but other than that you should be fine.

I'll definitely have a look at doing that, Tom, thank you.

ETA: Just had a look at the NowTV site and I need a Sky ID to create an account.

I got my box when they first went on sale,it could be things have changed since then, but it was only recently, I created an account without giving them my card details.

Then went on to watching the free content, having said that, the other day I did give them my card details, just to try it for free for thirty days.

Then I went on to uncheck the auto renew function,do it that way if you have to.

Yes I see what you mean, well there 'was' certainly the option to create a Now TV account without signing up for any pay stuff, even if only the free trial, because I did just that?

Thinking about getting a Now TV box, no subs.
What on demand services and apps will I get ?
Do I have to buy one from Now TV/Sky ?
I see Argos sell them but they are £24.99 with movies and £14,99 sports which I don't want, all I need is the £9.99 box.
Or a DVD player with catch up apps..

4oD is due before the end of the year. YouTube is side-loadable, there's a thread slightly further down this forum about that.

I bought the £14.99 "Sports" box from Argos with no intention of entering my debit card details.
I started to setup a NowTV account on the web which had the basic account settings on the first page and an option of movies or sports subscription on the 2nd page along with credit/debit card details.
After entering the details on the first page I selected the forgotten account/password option to re-create a new password. I then used these details to get the box logged in and working.
I closed my browser without entering any card details.
It seems to work fine.

^^ Year, but it is not a Now TV channel is it?

Actually, if you subscribe to USTVNOW which does have a NOW TV channel, you can record shows to the cloud and playback directly from the NOW TV box.

If you pay by DD monthly you can cancel it- they just send an email saying Bye for now. This happened to me when the card used to take payment expired and I didn't update it. I can update and resume service when I like so they say.

^^ Have you gone into the accounts section of Now TV itself on a browser and checked there?

If not, click on Now TV help/support and they have a live chat. They usually help out very quickly.
