The ad for James Arthur's new Album claim that Impossible is the biggest selling X Factor single ever. Is this true? I always though it was Burke with Hallelujah. Can anybody post a link to the sales? If he has overtaken her surely that's good for the future of X Factor?

I was shocked to hear that too. No idea about sales, but surely it must be true or they could be done for lying on the ad?

Wow, shocked to say the least. Not that it's a bad song, but of all the winners singles to break the record...

From a Digital Spy article in August

"Alexandra Burke holds on to the title of the best-selling X Factor single with 'Hallelujah', but James Arthur's 'Impossible' is only 30,000 sales behind having shifted 1.2m copies since December 2012.

Thanks, I just checked officialcharts.com and there are 3 X Factor winners' singles that have sold over a million - Matt Cardle 1.01m - James Arthur - 1.12m & Alexandra Burke 1.25m I'm not sure when this was last updated but it does have the latest Daft Punk single on it which probably passed the million mark at the end of the summer? So, I'm guessing Alexandra is still in the lead?

I'm guessing it recently passed Hallelujah otherwise they wouldn't have made the claim in the advert. Wow, that's some going and it seems that X Factor is stronger than ever. Will be interesting to see if this year's winner can achieve a similar sales figure.

No, James Arthur has sold more than any other X Factor contestant in terms of winners single. I can't remember the exact figure, but it's around the 1.7M mark I think?

When he performed on aus xfactor, the vt said he sold 2.5 million copies worldwide of it so maybe he sold more worldwide than alex? It went 5x platinum in aus which I think may be 350,000 sales alone (I could be wrong).

And meanwhile his first 'self-penned' (if you don't include the co-writers) single has dropped from 2 to 9 in the charts after only two weeks of release and plenty of promotion.

He could have sold 10 million copies of Impossible for all the good it will do the rest of his career - it doesn't mean he'll ever get anywhere near that number again.

Not true. The Official Charts Company recently tweeted that Hallelujah by Alexandra Burke is still the biggest selling X Factor single. It was also the first single ever by a British female to sell over a million copies.

The official charts company is only the uk though, he did well worldwide too, in particular australia.

Most of the time, the voice over is correct but sometimes they add single sales and album ones together, hence where some of them get 200m+ worldwide.

Sung by the worst singer? Or at least the most unappealing singer

She did not. She only passed a million far later with the addition of digital sales. Most likely after Alexandra Burke.
