Hi Guys

After a surge of very talented artists from places like Australia and New zealand like Iggy Azelia, Lorde and Gotye, im trying to branch out of the bubble of UK and US music and try and find some new music from the southern hemisphere.

Any genre welcome

The Datsuns - New Zealand I believe.

Their first album in particular is full of awesome riffs.

Orianthi is a highly skilled rock guitarist (from Australia, I believe) who was in Michael Jackson's band. She's currently playing in Alice Cooper's band but she's also releasing her own solo records. Check out the video for highly Strung on Youtube (which features Steve Vai).

You also have The Vines.

My favorite Aussie bands:

Cut Copy - Lights & Music (total 80s retro)
Angus Stone - Monsters (OZ's answer to bob dylan)
Voltaire Twins - Animalia (OZ's answer to Mew)
The Middle East - Blood (beautiful)

The thing I like about aussie music is there's a lot of retro bands today.

Miami Horror - Sometimes (practically channelling New Order)
Van She - Kelly (80s retro)
Grafton Primary - Telling Lies (this is pure 90s modtracker)
Tame Impala - Half Full Glass of Wine (70s-style psychedelia)

Nick Cave is still going strong. Enjoyed his album this year and some funny lyrics as usual.

If Nick Cave is in the frame then you should listen to
Midnight Oil, very radical and articulate but not really modern.

I also listened to a lot of Hugh Masekela and Ladysmith Black Mambazo after Paul Simon did Graceland.
I'm a bit surprised South African music didn't get more of a mention thinking back to John Kongos and Clout (first guitar playing girl group I can remember) from the 70s. But maybe the modern stuff isn't that good. I discovered Goldfish by accident.

Going back a bit but we must not forget the brilliant Crowded House from New Zealand.

Black Seeds - NZ. I like some of their songs.
Something For Kate - Australia. Some of their songs remind me of a certain time in my life (with an Aussie).

You might need to say what styles of music you like as there are thousands of artists knocking around the Southern Hemisphere!
