Temporary Mobile for Nan

Hi all,

My nan is moving into sheltered accommodation in the coming weeks. My mum has been helping her organise the move and phoned BT to arrange moving her phone line from her current council house. Unfortunately they cannot install for a few weeks, so she will be without a phone for that time.

Mum has suggested getting her a simple mobile phone with big buttons to use in the interim or for any emergencies. Something like this - http://www.amazon.co.uk/TTfone-Mars-...dp/B00FAO9WL4/

This seems ideal as nan is 86 and isn't great with new technology. I was just hoping you guys could suggest the best PAYG tariff to get for the above type of phone. I initially looked at the 3-2-1 offering from Three (3p calls, 2p texts, 1p internet) as this was the cheapest for voice calls (which is all she'll be using it for), but then I noticed that the big button type phones aren't 3G so not compatible with Three's 3G network. The next best thing I could find was Vodadone's sims, which give you some perks depending when and how much you top up.

Can anyone suggest any others?

most of the networks will do a bundle of minutes for £10, vodafone do 150min, orange, tmobile 100, o2 75

i'd say you want to check coverage first.

have a look at Tesco mobile's SIM only 1 month rolling contract. £10 gets you 500 mins I think.
They use O2's network so would check O2 is ok where she is going to live?

I'll have a look at some coverage checkers.

I didn't think of one-month rollers. Mostly because I think she'd only use the phone for a few weeks then go back to her trusty BT phone once installed. I believe with one month rollers you have to give a months notice - so two months payment. I'll check Tesco though. I believe Sainsburys do the same deal.

Sainsburys mobile basic plan would suit her pretty well i think (Uses Vodafone 2G)

Talkmobile essentials - 8p a minute and 4p a text. Not as cheap as 321, but still cheaper than all the big players by rate.

Thanks all. Both Vodafone MVNOs. Checked the Voda coverage and it seems there's a good signal / bad signal line going right through her new property. Might have to stand outside the place tonight with my own Vodafone phone and check the signal (if I can find a way of forcing 2G on my Android phone that is...)

My nan has one of those big old people phones.

Obviously theyre designed to be easy for older folk to use... But as someone who has been using proper mobile phones for years & years..., they are as confusing as hell!
