When I first purchased a widescreen TV (a CRT)- there were no widescreen programmes, just the odd letterbox film.
When we bought a HD ready TV there were no HD programmes. Or channels.

Not really the same, 3D is just a VERY minor addition to a TV, and completely invisible if you don't use it - so doesn't affect you in any way.

However, are you claiming you specifically bought the set because you wanted a 3D one? - 3D was never going to be a success, just as it hasn't been the numerous other attempts.

Actually no, we bought the set because of the size - 60". All the sets that big from the manufacturers we selected tended to have 3D capability. And as my Onkyo receiver is 3D enabled it seemed a good match.
You're right we never actually thought it would take off big time, But we did expect a fair amount of 3D material on Blue Ray. Even that has not materialised. The last one we rented (Harry Potter 7 part 1) was obviously remastered from the original. Have not bothered since.

At $700, its a bit more representative than the $3600 Sharp one Apple made available at xmas.

Yeah 1ms response time as well so suitable for gamers.

The Sharp 32" I think uses 95 watts, compared to the 31 watts for the brighter more contrasty 28" Samsung one.

And rather strangely Sharp are claiming big things for their 'IGZO low power'.

Seems we have White Oled and RGB Oled, the new LG ones being white Oled I think.
White OLED does sound a bit full circle hybrid LCD like tech.

Personally I will be waiting for 4K OLED - LG are just releasing their new OLED models right now and hopefully they will farm out their panels to other manufacturers for 2015.

55" seems to be the minimum for 4K - that is what I have now and certainly wouldn't want to go any bigger so will see where we are at the end of 2015.

My Panasonic plasma will keep me going quite nicely until then and a few 4K specs still have to be implemented as it stands ...

Hybrid or not it is the only method that can be mass-produced - Samsung's method cannot get the yields necessary to get them into anything like full production and the others have pretty much given up ...

And it says yields of the real thing, RGB OLED are only 80% at best.
What I cannot understand, is if they are simply making a white LED, why do they need to be OLED ?

Is there an advantage over normal white LED, is it a halfway house thing or a quarter way house thing?

For the reasons (pixel size, power consumption, fabrication, cost) you don't get small LED displays for example there are no consumer size TVs using LEDS other than as a backlight. At the moment the choice for the consumer TV is LCD, plasma or OLED, any addition to this will be a new technology not LED.

The price should answer that. I would be amazed if it had superior pictures to a recognised Full-HD TV like Sony or Pansonic.


4K on such a small screen is just plain stupid. You would have to sit really close to it even assuming (a big assumption) that it has a decent picture., to even see any difference. And by the way apart from Netflix there is no 4K source as yet. At that sort of price I doubt it's even compatible with this (which I guess is the reason for the price).

I've got a 4k tv not really because of 4k but because it was the only decent TV in my price range, still not 100% happy with my pioneer kuro plasma beyond economical repair. it was a fine TV.

Turns out even at home, tv now ISF calibrated, 4k is for me on a 55" Tv at 2.5-3M a nice step up in picture quality on resolution alone, to my eyes. it's not as big the jump from SD to HD and the 4k content has to be right up to scratch. When it is it looks stunning.

End of the day good HD looks great too. just a shame all LCD's especially with edge lit LED back lights mostly suck. It like a lottery trying to get a uniform LCD panel these days.

The only LED/LCD TV that looks like it might be any cop on paper at the moment is the panasonic AX900/AX902 series. OLED has a fair bit more development to go to go 4k without having a massive 65"+ screen.

Maybe not even HD then, and I bet it is a 'bodged to Freeview' Seiki.

It is the re-badged Seiki Digital SE39UY04 and it only has a standard SD Freeview tuner as you guessed.

And only 1 HDMI ???

Product description states it has 3 HDMI inputs.

I imagine I would find it hard to see one anyway. The term LED TV has been abused to mean LED backlit TV.

By all accounts it's a half decent TV - Reviews say the 4k and 1080p picture quality is v.good to excellent, it's also an excellent 4k monitor, 120hz gaming ain't too shabby either.

The US model does get updates, no idea about the UK equivalent.....

Looking around the best 4K TV on a reasonable budget seems to be the Samsung UE40HU6900 which has HDMI 2.0 and Freeview HD you can get it for as little as £549 online Argos sell this TV but its £999.00 with them

I am not sure if Dell is the first but they have released a set with 4 inputs allowing 4 standard 2K 1080 pictures to be shown together on the one 43" 4K set.
