Is it safe to take new puppy to a house

Is it safe to take my new 8 week old puppy to my parents house?

They have two dogs who are older and I am not sure if they have been vaccinated. They are mostly in the garden but occasionaly come inside, I want to take my puppy but I am not sure if it would be safe? I will not let puppy outside, only in the living room with me ( where the dogs run through to get to garden ) so do you think I should avoid?

It is important for your puppy to meet new dogs and people however I always ask people if their dogs are vaccinated before mine do so before they have their own vacs.

If they are vaccinated I would happily take my puppy to meet dogs they are going to be seeing more of as they grow up. I wouldn't worry too much about them in the garden either but only you can know what level of risk you are willing to take.

Are there really people around with adult pets that aren't vaccinated?

I would totally agree with molliepops, the important thing to consider is whether the other dogs have been properly vaccinated (with annual boosters), and also to ensure that no other non-vaccinated dogs visit the same garden. Othewrwise is is as safe as letting your puppy into your own garden.

Yep, some people sincerely believe that annual vaccinations are either unnecessary or cause more harm than good.

They might have other thoughts considering that there have been 4 recent outbreaks of Parvo amongst strays in my area recently.

Yes I stop vaccinating at about 8 they have enough protection IMO after 8 years of vacs. I brought our latest pup into the flat with our unvaccinated older dog and no problem. But it's a risk we have to make a decision on ourselves.

It's becoming more common for people not to vaccinate, certainly not the yearly booster and more and more medical conditions are linked to the vaccines.

Most of the commonly used vaccines last for 3 -7 years, so yearly boosters are largely just a cash cow for vets.
It's only lepto that really needs doing yearly.

Vaccination against parvo isn't 100% reliable as there are so many strains, I know of someone who lost their fully vaccinated dobie to parvo

It's a personal decision IMHO, just like neutering, so long as people make an informed decision.

Completely agree, and we too saw a fully vaccinated collie die from parvo, so the different strains are not covered adequately by vaccines at the moment.
