Arlene's scoring method
Rosegrower
11-11-2013
I remember Arlene saying that she always started on 5 and then moved up or down in single digits according to the performance. That seems a very methodical approach and I wonder if the current judges have a similar system? Some of them seem to use a very narrow band and I wonder if they are just giving an impression mark? As a teacher myself I have always favoured Arlene's approach because I had to justify the marks I gave, especially when grading public examinations at GCSE and A level.

Wow, didn't know that. Quite a good system for SCD.

This year in particular it seems to have been a case of "desperate diseases call for desperate remedies".

Natalie had such a massive head start over the other celebs that the PTB needed a damage limitation strategy from the word go, to minimise the number of viewers losing interest because the result was a foregone conclusion.

So they encouraged substance-light routines and overlooked shortcomings in technique so that they could give a few chosen celebs the same marks as Natalie - creating the illusion of genuine competition.

The voting seems to have been a bit erratic this year. Also, maybe I'm imagining it as I haven't got any data, but there seemed to be more 8s and 9s being given out in the first few weeks than normal.

Len explained his system on ITT a couple of years ago..... starting at 1 for turning up 5 for performing a recognisable dance and 10 for perfection.....

Im sure its buried somewhere in the ITT thread, but it did make sense when he said it

Didn't 8s, 9s and 10s used to be given not often?

Perhaps the most obvious example of what's been going on this year was Abbey's Week 1 Waltz. The judges were ecstatic, and I believe gave it a higher score than Natalie's routine.

But it wasn't a Waltz - presumably because Abbey didn't have the core/balance required for the turns and spins.

Not a problem. All the routine required of Abbey was that she did what she does for a living - look good, move gracefully and create nice lines. Nothing in that routine required any balance from her.

There was a bit at the start where she just walked past Ajaz - which I guess Ajaz originally choreographed as an underarm turn or spin, but had to change because after three weeks of training Abbey still couldn't deliver it without losing her balance.

Just put her 30-hour secret dance lessons in perspective, innit, can't even spot?

I was just reading that Natalie still has to do an American Smooth. Bet you there's nothing in the rules to prevent a couple from delivering the same routine for two dances

The thing I remember about Arlene and her voting was, if they were male and she liked them they were rewarded higher scores and there were oodles of people (on this site) jumping up and down about her bias.
However
In principle it's a very good idea.

Lens scoring depends on what cycle his meds are on.
