Before I heard about KitKat, I always thought K was going to be Key Lime Pie. Did Rowntree's sponsor the new name?

Dont be too hasty if you like sending texts, you can either use hangouts which is utter shite or a broken version of Handcent

it was going to be called KLP. the early versions had that name internally. it's not clear if anyone paid anyone, they just said they thought it would be cool.

It tells you if an OTA update is available and you have the option to dismiss it.

It has just landed for both variants of the Nexus 7. Nexus 4 can't be that far away now.

I thought the point of the nexus devices was you got the update immediately? I'm surprised it's taken this long to be released.

Google always seem to start the release around two weeks after its announced availability. We are just about two weeks out from that announcement.

very strange comment. you get it as soon as it's available and before others devices.

i don't really understand what you mean by 'you got the update immediately' immediately that what? you can't get the update before it's finished.

Nexus 7's and 10's are now getting the update. However cellular ones aren't .. That includes the nexus 4.
That update is "coming soon"

Rumour is the clear view navi buttons and status bar along with the feature to swipe them away isn't coming to the nexus 4. Hope that isn't true.

My mistake. I thought that it was released when the nexus 5 became available, I hadn't realised there was a delay between the two.

Does the old trick of clearing the Google Services Framework data not work anymore to force the update?

I've switched over to Go SMS Pro in anticipation of Kit Kat coming to my Nexus 4. It's better than the stock SMS app anyway. I've paid the 3.20 to get rid of the ads. Showed it to the wife, she liked it so has swapped over, even though her phone won't be getting Kit Kat I don't think (HTC One Mini). So that's two buys they've got because of Kit Kat (directly and indirectly).

I have to say it's working for me too. I didn't even know the "hangouts" thing was an issue, as the SMS interface seems very similar to the Nexus 4 to me.

it could be now it could be in 2 weeks, OTA updates always seem very staggered.

what range of options do you need in an SMS app?
it sends SMS, it receives SMS - job done really.

With Kitkat apparently designed to work on low end devices, I wonder if it will speed up the original Nexus 7. It's not exactly underpowered but mine certainly does feel laggy.
