It is sort of. in many ways it's better.

but the point at issue is that they have merged the sms client in to hangouts, so the sms client is gone and hangouts is now used to send sms and hangouts. which leads to some strange issues.
Got my Nexus 5 yesterday and have found no issues at all with SMS via Hangouts. As others have said what other elaborations do you need for SMS. Type and send and receive. Job done.

I think I may well flash them tonight.

According to Brian Klug the OTAs are rolled out, by Google at least, the following way. They send out updates to 10% of the devices and wait to see how many come back on line, or in other words how may brick. They do it again for another 10%. Then it is open to all. Not sure how true those percentages are but I wouldn't argue with anyone from AnandTech.
Another take on the update/rollout process:

Rollouts are conducted in phases. Typically they start at 1% of devices for around 24 - 48 hours; we watch the return rates and resulting device checkins and error reports (if any), and make sure nothing looks wrong before sending it to more. Then typically it goes to 25%, 50%, 100% over the course of a week or two.

What the percentages mean is that when your device checks in, it has a 1% chance (for example) of being offered the OTA. If it doesn't (randomly) get an offer, it will never get an offer until the next batch.

IOW, once your device checks in and gets turned down, that's it until the next batch. Mashing on the "check for updates" button just causes your device to check in again, and get automatically turned down again. Think about how that makes your device feel! WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE PHONES?!

That said, once the new batch does start, hitting that button does give you a new roll of the dice -- but once. Since devices usually only check in for system updates every 24 hours (I think? Certainly on a many-hours basis) this can get you your shot sooner than it would happen on its own.

So, mash away. Just be patient, and mashing on it more often than once or twice a day isn't going to gain you anything.

Edit: also, keep in mind that this isn't first-come/first-served. You're not racing other devices to get your slot in the current batch, or something.

I like Hangouts

BUT

Ive had to revert to Handcent (Go SMS now sends you way too much spam) because I send a lot of Group SMS. Problem with Hangouts is that it forces Group SMS to convert to MMS. And these, in the UK, are not included in most tarrifs. Therefore a single group text to my 20 numbers in my junior football squad could cost me £5 .....

unless im missing something daft

that you haven't seen any issues in the few hours you have had the phone, does not mean that there aren't any.

if we were discussing urban foxes and i said i had seen several in a particular area, and you said that you had seen non it would not change anything.

saw this in the Three free MMS thread:
I heard its to do with the Nexus.

If you text more than 1 person the Nexus changes the message to an MMS,

Until a fix is in place, Three are giving customers (not sure how they find who) 500 free MMS a month

I quite often see urban foxes here in Bristol but I’m yet to see one with a Nexus 5.

Couldn't agree more. I am merely putting forward my experience so far, as are you. All things can change over time. In 12 months time when the Nexus 5 extra or whatever it's called is launched we might be talking about that and the fact that Google have dropped Hangouts in favour of something else. Who knows.

My phone has an option to send group SMS as MMS, does yours have this? Maybe it's checked as default?

My phone is Nexus 4.

I had a prompt to download the new hangouts but didn't select it because of people complaining about it on various forums.

If i had accepted it would this SMS/MMS option have disappeared from my phone?

Yep that option disappears with Hangouts on Kit Kat (hence me reverting to Handcent where the option is still available).

Interesting to hear about the Three free MMS offer. I might try a quick Group MMS (well 2 people to keep the cost down) on hangouts and then see if i get given free MMS too

An issue I might have is that often if you reply to an MMS on many phones it automatically goes as MMS.

So if you send them an MMS they might send you one back and be poised at you.

Perhaps someone can explain why although I have Hangouts on my Samsung Galaxy S2, I still have a separate Messaging icon at the bottom of the screen.

Nexus 4 OTA file direct from Google for those who want to install it manually using the "adb sideload" command.

Hangouts is a Google app. I'm guessing your Samsung messaging app is separate.

It just means that you have the choice between using Google's Hangouts or Samsung's own app to manage text messages. It's just like for the internet you can use Samsung's browser or Chrome.

I tried Hangouts but didn't like it. I don't use Google+ Hangouts so I just went back to the regular massaging app.
