What phone are you using? Nexus 4, I presume? Have you tried other keyboards from the playstore?

I highly recommend Smart Keyboard. It has T9 and is feature-rich. Try it out and get the Pro version if you like it.

I find it odd T9 is being ignored as some prefer it, even on bigger devices.

Honestly, with a screen of that size 4.8in it makes little sense to continue using T9 pad.

Accessibility-wise, typing on a T9 is easier for the hard of seeing as the layout is easily remembered and knowing which button to hit (and how many times) to get a certain character is all you need to know to use the keyboard easily and (very) quickly) without seeing the labels (or keys in the case of QWERTY layouts) clearly. Equality and diversity and all that... Even when seeing a QWERTY keyboard I find myself hitting the wrong keys more often than a T9 even with my allegedly pianist fingers!
