Hi, I want to connect my DVD player, which has a SCART output connection to a flat screen monitor, which has a VGA connection. Consequently I bought a VGA (male) to SCART (male) cable but I can't get the monitor to recognise any input from the DVD player.

I bought the cable off eBay for a couple of quid but can't get it to work with any devices, for example I have tried using the cable to connect my 37inch Samsung LCD to a DVD player with no luck. Also tried connecting several different DVD players to my monitor with the same issues. Is it likely to be a faulty cable or possibly incompatible cable? Does anyone have any recommendations for a particular cable to use to solve this issue?

Thanks in advance!

If you can be ar5ed then send it back for a refund. And don't bother looking for another cable. I don't think I have ever found a SCART to VGA lead that even remotely works. Quick scan of Amazon shows that hardly any such leads get more than 2 star reviews, which should tell you how good they aren't

Ah I was afraid you might say that! It does seem that a lot of people struggle to find a cable to work. I think the monitor does have one other connection port, I think its a HDI (Not HDMI), would it be better to find a cable for that connection instead?

Do you mean DVI?

If so that cannot be directly cabled to SCART. Though if the DVD player has HDMI then DVI and HDMI are electrically compatible and a simple cable can interconnect the two and is more likely to work.

Yes DVI sorry, although the DVD player doesn't have a HDMI port. I could possibly look into buying a new DVD player with a HDMI port, how much are they nower days?

So if I purchased a DVD player with a HDMI port could I easily get a cheap cable that would almost 100% work with VGA and or DVI?

Thanks

Not quite that simple. HDMI and DVI are digital formats. HDMI was derived from DVI which is why they can be interconnected via a simple cable with the appropriate connectors each end.

VGA is an analogue format. it cannot be connected to either DVI or HDMI by a simple cable. You need electronics to convert one to the other. By the way don't be fooled by plugs that adapt a DVI plug to VGA. They don't do any signal conversion. They connect to a hybrid form of DVI socket that carries digital and analogue signals on separate pins.
