Something odd happened last night which gave me the heeby-jeebies...

Missus recently got a Galaxy S4 as an upgrade.
She's had an android phone before and, as a result, already has a google account.

So, she bought a case for the phone and I wondered whether the case would interfere with the camera lens or flash.
I took a couple of pictures of the wall and the floor, just to see if there was any blurring at the edge of the pictures or any bright/dark spots caused by the case reflecting the flash etc.
All fine. No problems.

And then, about 10 minutes later, our Android tablet (which also uses my missus' google account) makes a chirping sound to tell me it's received an email.

The email tells me that my new pictures have been backed-up to Google+ and asks if I'd like to share them on any social network.

I'm not at all comfortable with a phone automatically uploading pictures to the internet.
Aside from the obvious potential issues with privacy, it concerns me that my missus might be snapping away at a concert or party and be unknowingly racking-up a huge bill for data use.

Weird thing is, this never happened with her previous phone and, as I say, when she got the new phone I just typed in her existing google account details and the phone didn't ask for any new permissions to upload stuff or back stuff up automatically.

So, any ideas how I go about telling her phone to stop automatically uploading/backing-up photo's to google+?

There is a setting in Google+ to enable/disable this. Whilst you may not want to use g+ for this the auto backup feature is great (I use drop box). A colleague had their phone nicked recently. Had they had autobackup on they would only have lost a fee photos. Instead they lost hundreds.....

And I believe the default upload to g+ is as 'private' so these aren't being shared at all with other people....

Open the Google Settings app, select Google+, Auto BackUp, and you can turn it on/off there or set more specific options like "on WiFi only", which should be the default.

Automatically backing up photos is a very useful feature - it's automatically sharing to the rest of the world that you need to be careful of! Just set the backups to happen on WiFi only.

I would use this if you could turn off video back up.
