So sorry to read of your loss OP. We lost our beloved Max (German Shepherd) back in August. We'll never forget him.

This week we have adopted a Basset Hound crossed with a German shepherd. 9 months old and a real handful. Believe me it does help heal the pain of loss.

Ahhh, I grew up with a german shepherd called Max. Fantastic dogs. Bet the young one is keeping you on your toes!

Not sure if your taking the mick or being sympathetic, he wasn't amazing but he was somebody I cared about and I found comfort in him when I had nobody.

If I had never crossed paths with him then I know I wouldn't be here today.

I have yet to meet anything or anyone truly amazing.

Thank you Yeah_Jackie. I've cried buckets in the past couple of days, even around other people, but like you said it's very important to let it out. I sent the link on to my sister and we're going to make a profile for our dog. We're putting our heads together at the moment to think of a good message to put on the site.

We've actually decided, only this morning, that we will get another dog, perhaps in the spring time, when we have had time to really grieve over our dog. Thanks again.

Hi Jammoon, thank you for your kind words. I am so sorry to hear of your own loss last week. Please don't feel guilty, you absolutely did the right thing putting your dog to sleep. I felt the same on Tuesday, but now I can see that I absolutely made the right decision - like you said, both our dogs are free from pain and illness now, and we have done them such a huge favour. I'm still finding looking at his old pictures quite difficult, and also find it difficult to walk the same route we used to walk our dog, as recently as last week. It's definitely the same as losing a family member - the house just feels so empty and everyone is in mourning at the moment, I'll give myself a bit more time to grieve - we've already started to discuss what breed of dog we may get, perhaps in the spring.

Thank you avasgranny. I've heard it said before that the only flaw that pets have is that they're with us for such a short amount of time.

That was a beautiful post, WInterLily, thank you. It definitely feels like my world has stopped, I've been on autopilot for the last couple of days. But I have things to look forward to in the next week - so I'm doing my best now to focus on that. You're totally correct in that the grief is physical - it literally feels like my heart IS broken. I'm doing my best to replace the images of my pet being put to sleep with those of him, playing and being happy, all those happy memories across the 11 years before he became sick last week. We are all supporting each other and just talking about our memories with one another. People have been lovely on Facebook, sending condolences and this has been very comforting for all of us.

And you're right - as time passes, this pain at his death will be replaced by the memories of the wonderful 11 years we spent with him, and how lucky we were to have him. We'll always remember him. Thanks again for your lovely comment.

Thank you ILoveMyDog. We had been debating whether or not we should see the injection being administered, or whether we should leave the room. But even though I found seeing him being put to sleep before my eyes very distressing on the day, I'm now glad that we were all there for him at the very end to say and to kiss him goodbye. xx

As for not meeting anyone truly amazing, well you didnt meet my old heinz 57 - best dog ever

So many people cant understand the bond between a human and dog but what you wrote shows how powerful it can be, sometimes more so than with other humans.

Glad everything turned out well for you.

Thanks mrsgrumpy49. He was a member of our family, and it feels so strange to have him gone. Even though it felt awful at the time, we now realise that we spared him suffering by letting him go when we realised that he had no chance of getting better and that he was just a shell of his former self. xx

Thanks Terry. I'm so sorry to hear of your own loss of Max. That's great that you've adopted a new dog - that's a lovely breed of dog. We've decided to get a new dog in the springtime hopefully - we haven't settled on the breed yet, but I'm hoping it will be another golden lab.

Oh dear I do feel so sorry and sad for you. It is horrendous and any dog, to a real dog lover, is a very important member of the family. My heart goes out to you. We lost one of our beloved dogs 5 weeks ago. All I can say is each day I cried less and the memory of the last moments got less painful. I am now remembering the happiness and great love she brought us more and more. I am also able to look at her photo's and videos just this week, without sobbing. It does get easier and another dog will not be the same but a new and equally loveable friend.Good luck

You poor thing, OP. I've been through this, and the best thing is to let them go. You didn't do anything wrong at all: you just let his suffering end before it got too painful.

Thank you Anne. Dogs are such an important member of the family, and the loss feels so great. I'm so sorry to hear about your own loss too. It's very hard to look at photos and videos without being on the verge of tears or just crying outright. We'll get a new dog in the spring, and will do our best not to compare him to our beloved labrador, but to love him in his own right and to create many happy new memories.Thank you again for your kind comments xx

Thank you los kay, and I'm really sorry to hear you've been in the same position. Even though we're still heartbroken, it's great comfort to know that we let him go before his pain got too great, and so we spared him of that. xx

So sorry to hear of the loss you have gone through Cass. It happened to us with our Cat a week ago, and it is just like losing a member of family, because thats what they are, members of the family. Time is a healer though, it is a cliche but a relevant one. Chin up.

Thank you AJ, and I'm so sorry to hear about your loss too with your cat. Animals are very much a part of the family, and their loss can be felt so profoundly. It's true that time is a great healer. xx
