My Cat Ate Sellotape!
wizzywick
13-11-2013
i was wrapping a couple of birthday gifts earlier and my tabby cat just picked up a scrunched up bit of sellotape and put it in her mouth. I managed to retrieve it but she wasn't happy. Then she somehow found a smaller piece and ate it, including swallowing, before I get at it. She also chews bin bags and anything polythene. Since then she has been a little bit sneezy and doesn't seem her usual soppy self. I think if there's no improvement in the morning I may take her to the vets.

Does anyone else have a cat that chews weird things and does it usually sort itself out in the end? She is 11 and when she was three I had to take her to the vet as she ate a needle and thread.

Hi there, there was a thread by someone else on here just a few weeks ago about their cat swallowing a piece of sellotape as well. Sorry I can't remember who the FM was or the outcome although I am sure the cat was ok. Hope your pusskins is ok.

I'm sure she'll be fine (he says with fingers crossed). She has always been a bit weird. She will probably have one of her usual retching attacks which will hopefully shift. I have never ever had a cat that has gone to the vet so often as my little Holly. She is a sneezy moggy anyway so I can't be sure if it's one of her sneezing phases or as a result of eating sticky tape. Thanks for replying. I might look for that thread you mention.

Hi wizzywick, I'm sure she'll be fine, but if you're in doubt, take her to vets,

every Christmas my cat eats the long bits of tinsel off the tree, she's done it for last 12 yrs,
think she likes the tree more than me!

Lol! Your cat sounds as barmy as mine! But how we love them so. She ate the sellotape at about mid-day. She isn't choking or anything, just a bit sneezy.

Is that normal for her to be abit sneezy? if so, don't worry!

Yeah, since about 2005. I've taken her to the vets loads of times. I get told by the vet "As long as the snot is green she's fine!" Thankfully there isn't much snot and when there is it's always green. She is an indoor cat so I guess she sneezes because of that. I've had her since 2002 when she she was a tiny kitten. As I type she has wandered into the kitchen to crunch some of her cat biscuits. Hopefully I am just over reacting because of the sellotape. It wasn't a large piece.

Is it a catastrophe if she consumes small pieces of sellotape?

My cat goes out of his way to eat plastic of all Kinds. Bags. Tape anything like that. Can't count the amount of times I've cleaned up plastic laden cat vomit.

He's almost 10 and has done it all his life with no ill effect. If you're worried pop to the vets.

He's had one scare which I thought was plastic but turned out to be an infection. No matter how careful I am the little sod always manages to find something.

My 12 year old does the same, he's always been fine though no ill effects.
