I always find it funny how the fans are so horrified by any implication that the Doctor might not be asexual. He has a granddaughter! Admittedly the conception might be a little different but really, did a sixties audience watch the show and complain that the presence of a granddaughter implied that the Doctor must have been sexually active?
The point of the show is more about the romance of time travel and its possibilities, so I think that sexual romance would detract from the fantasy escapism at the heart of the story, but then there are many things that could detract (such as skimpily dressed female companions).
With the casting of Capaldi, we can assume that they're moving away from the sexual romance, which will be refreshing.
