It was funny when he revealed he had used the school's double bass and hadn't handed it back yet. And he was very honest about the fact that he doesn't read (he can read but chooses not to).

All in all, it was a very successful appearance, rounded off with a lovely tweet.

I am the same as him when in that regard, I never read newspapers or watch the news and I rarely read in general! I can read though too He did respond well to the 1D bit, a good appearance overall, I like watching him on this show.

Trying to figure out now if I can go to any of the gigs later in the summer

Thanks for these, he was on fine form, just seems to get more & more relaxed, great to see.
He looked as though he got a bit emotional singing Amazing, maybe it has taken on a bit of a different slant after what he has went through lately.

Matt's rather gorgeous appearance on The National Lottery.

All I can say is WAISTCOAT!!

ETA - I was a bit surprised about the double platinum reference (from Gaby not Matt) but WWC the single went platinum too - so technically he does have two platinum records.

Here's an interview I haven't seen before - from the red carpet premiere of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". For some reason this only got posted to YT on January 15th this year, whereas the premiere was in 2011. Anyway, it is the second time in two days that I have seen him admit he isn't a big reader. Bit awkward at the start, as he didn't seem to know much about the book or the film LOL.

Friendly waves to all

I did manage to finally get to the Accoustic Festival on Friday (rather busy mad few days, some of which involved music - full orchestra & chorus, marvellous stuff). I bumped into some fellow Matt fans parking the car (don't know names, but I recognised their faces) & then proceeded into the event to have a wander around the trade stands (most interesting, lots of very arty handmade goodies but what really caught my eye was the most fabulously textured & colourful clothing which was rediculously cheap for the work of creating the design - all imported of course). The organisers were correct in their statement of this is a friendly festival, there was a lovely vibe about the place. The weather, well it was overcast & a tad muggy with a feel of dampness in the air so I did wonder about those singing. Having got my bearings of stage locations via other helpful folks I spotted some fellow fans in white ( now those gig hoodies were an inspired colour choice, lol ). After initial greetings front of a very large stage I looked up & there Matt was just about to set up & sound check - that was rather good timing I thought Paul was with him too, bless - he only had a shirt on & it was a tad nippy (I was in three layers). I wondered why his keys were sat on two speakers ???? Plus he also seemed to be sat on a speaker himself? Anyhows, much concentration on setting up, getting things balanced up correctly, a few smiles then off they both went. The standing part front of stage was filling up gently all the time and when he did actually start the set it continued to do so as did the seated/standing bit behind it as folks came over to listen. The set list has been posted already & I loved the arrangements with Pauls keys, it really added some extra depth & dimension to the acoustic arrangements. As for THAT voice of his, Jeeeez, what a set of pipes he has I never get bored of listening to him sing live like this that's for sure! As you say BB we got a really long set, the more it went on the warmer those pipes got (tho I'm not too sure about Paul's fingers - he still only had on a short sleeved shirt). The reason for the odd keyboard blocks was admitted - Matt forget to pack his stand in the car, but it's all rather rock n roll he quipped! There was friendly banter from the crowd, fans as per the normal stuff we all know and some quips from the festival crowd tho he declined a beer After his set had finished the area cleared rather rapidly (some no doubt seeking him out back stage) with pleas of don't disappear, we've got more acts soon on here! Mentioning backstage, my OH had been very delayed & ended up back stage accidentally towards the end of the set (that would have been a lol if he'd come up the ramp or M had bumped into him going off). By the time he got around & through the correct gate it had all concluded. I then said my goodbyes & joined him though most fans were leaving now, it was getting pretty cold & damp ( sooo glad I wasn't camping like some). We hung around for a while into the darkness, listened to some rather good acoustic music in packed tents, whilst picking at a bowl of chips as you do The rather colourful festival characters were all around, some slightly swaying as they walked by this stage, bless and I was most envious of those in onesies (snug as a bug in a rug on the chilly eve). As Steve H was coming on we took the chairs out of the beer tent to sit upon. Whilst negotiating this manoeuvre, 1/2 lager in one hand, chair in another, trying to avoid people, tent ropes etc I overheard a mans voice saying " he did Jolene, and he sang it in such a way that I listened to/heard the words for the first time, it's quite a sad song" "for a guy to sing that song, reach those notes????? Then I lost it as my OH was beckoning me over (I'd ground to a halt mid exist to listen). So it's not just us guys who are affected like this Have to admit Steve H was brilliant, just him, some keys & a violin. He mentioned that he'd had a chat with Matt backstage, what a small world it was as they'd been born/lived near each other (I couldn't quite catch it due to background beer tent banter), what a great singer Matt was He also mentioned Matt again later but I couldn't catch what he said. So all in all a great night, I felt that Matt had won over a rather curious crowd who probably only ever associated him with XF and were wondering what to expect (as per your fav tweet of the eve CRABBIE - it may well have been that guy I overheard). If I get chance, I'm going back to the festival today & guess what, the suns out

So there you go, hope you enjoy the read xx

What a great read Pie. I love the bit about the guy hearing the words of Jolene for the first time. Sounds like it was a great atmosphere and Matt gained some new admirers. Thanks for posting. Have a great day today.

Thanks for the report Pie. Lovely to hear all the details. I watched all the videos yesterday. He was certainly in fine voice. And looking uber smart on The Lottery. So the era of the shabby chic seems to have passed (at least for public events). I like both looks. I was thinking that he hasn't mentioned working with other writers for a while. Guess he hasn't had much opportunity recently.

Thanks Pie - nice to get a feel for the atmosphere

I read up a bit on Steve Harley out of curiosity - apparently he had polio as a child, so they have childhoods spent in hospital in common. He was born in Deptford, southeast London, but he worked for newspapers in Essex as a young man and now lives in Suffolk

Same here. Son has now said he got the wrong date for the birthday thing so the IOW Sunday is now clear but it costs £75 for a day ticket and I'd have to take daughter who wants to go back to London mid afternoon. And OH has booked his 2 week holiday over the period of the Jimmy's farm festival. Such is life!

Thanks for the posting, it was nice to read. I used to love Cockney Rebel and lovely memories of Steve Harley, whilst still at school and appreciating Old Grey Whistle Test and good old Top of the Pops. Loved 'Make Me Smile' whilst at school, but one of my all time favs is 'Sebastian'.

Sorry, going on, but I would have been in heaven, Matt and Steve Harley (just need Freddie Mercury and Alex Harvey on a spiritual visit to earth) to finish it off. Glad you had a lovely time.

I am going to be random, with apologies, but put this lot together with Matt and I swear I will have died and gone to Heaven. Just so love pure theatrics in an artist.

Haha, no way - I tend to hide at the back & just watch everyone else in these situations (I was spotted hiding at Sony launch event). I think I've only ever gone to stage door either to say hi to folks whilst waiting for my lift (Birmingham) or at Union Chapel were I just wanted to say "thank you for a fabulous eve" to the man himself (neither time I actually saw Matt). However, if I accidentally bump into him I will kick my own butt & say hello (after asking if it's ok first via his mgnt which I did at the airport lounge). I really don't like to invade his personal space as such if you can understand me

EDIT You'd have loved Steve, we both thought he was great - came over as a real "music" man who still loved the game as much as ever

I know exactly what you mean, I am the same. If I bumped into him in the street I would smile and walk on by (not wishing to intrude into his personal space). However, I would be completely high as a kite (on adrenolin) and no doubt walk into a lamppost, knock myself out and hope he would notice enough to phone for the ambulance (lol).

With regards Steve Harley, I am glad he was good. I can imagine him and Matt getting on, due to their respect for their craft. I also have visions of Matt being more than proud to be sharing the stage with a few old Sixty and Seventy legends. What were the Animals like (I used to adore Slade, back in the marvellous Seventies). Chas Chandler, ex-Animal who then went on to manage Jimi Hendrix and of course Slade?

May or may not be right, but I still love Cockney Rebel. For some reason I have an image of Steve Harley in the Seventies impersonating Malcolme McDowell in Clockwork Orange (I was a McDowell fan as well). Gosh, need to do the ironing and have popped down memory lane.

Sorry, being so random, but glad you had a seriously good time and your OH enjoyed the event.

Love hearing comments like that one you overheard Pie, thanks for reporting! If a singer can make you hear a song for the first time and actually listen to the words that is the mark of a good artist if you ask me, that's what he did for me at Bootcamp with First Time. I'd never been interested in the song before but suddenly I had tears in my eyes!

Thanks for the festival report Pie. Had to LOL at Matt forgetting to pack the keyboard stand - I think Paul had better take charge of his own equipment in future. I would love to have heard the reaction when they realised it was missing. But seriously, just based on his tweets about random happenings in his life (dishwaher tabs in washing machine/drinking a salt wash thinking it was a slush puppy/radox in the eyes/passport incidents etc) why would anyone trust Matt to be in charge of the equipment?

A bit of a shame that the crowd drifted away after Matt's set, but personally, I think he should have been higher up the line-up, and it isn't that surprising that people left after he performed. I wouldn't be surprised if the same happens at Sportsfest, I think he is on too early, compared with some of the acts coming on after. Particularly if you see the interaction on their twitter account, where it is mainly Matt's fans that tweet about it.

Nice also to hear the anecdotes about the chap's reaction to Jolene and also Steve Harley talking backstage etc. These are the things that you just can't get from watching other people's YTs of the performances.
