I have an iPad mini and last week it got wet after my water bottle leaked in my bag. It wasn't working properly so I put it in rice for three days. It now functions fine, except for a couple of problems with the home button.

The home button doesn't work 90% of the time when I press it. This is obviously fixable by enabling assistive touch.

However, on occasion, my iPad seems to think that I'm pressing the home button, and so Siri activates randomly, and my apps keep closing unannounced. I've deactivated Siri, but is there a way to deactivate the home button completely, so it doesn't work at all?

You want to disable it to prevent it mis-registering presses. As suggested, this isn't possible on a stock iPad.

Clearly, water ingress to the micro-switch is causing problems either by shorting the contacts within or oxidisation of the contacts.

Rice can work at drawing most of the moisture, but I would suggest placing the iPad in a warm environment for a few days i.e. the airing cupboard if you have one. Alternatively, use a hair dryer to warm the lower portions of the iPad for at least 10 minutes* - just don't allow it to get too hot; it's not good for the battery or LCD. The warmth should allow any residual moisture to evaporate.

(I tried to revive a digital camera by 1)Rice for a few days then 2) a warm oven(!!) for a while after. Needless to say it never recovered from being dropped in the canal )

*and yes I kind of pulled that figure out of the air but should be sufficient to allow the warmth to permeate the device and hopefully fix your problem...

Surely Apple give you a way to disable it. Try in store for a fre repair.

Barring that I'd maybe suggest disconnecting it physically.
Maybe that is possible despite there being that 'untouched by non Apple hands' design strategy.
