What would you say were the most pointless Greatest Hits albums ever released? I'll start:-

Spice Girls Greatest Hits - They only released 3 albums and only 12 singles. Also the timescale of the songs was only like 4 years which I think defeats the purpose of a GH because I personally think a GH album's purpose is to look back over a long period of an artists career and show the growth of their music

As a fan, I felt Christina's greatest hits came a bit too early and the final tracklisting had a few key songs missing

Britney Spears Singles collection, many hits missing not to mention only one new track.

And Scouting For Girls.

Years ago Greatest Hits were released after a group had split up, sometimes they are released to fulfil a contractual obligation. But find releasing a greatest hits while still going strong as a group or artist is a bit odd, it all smells of 'rip off' to me. Then you have some record companies repackaging and changing track and calling it a different title.

Pretty soon, there will be a 1D great hits or best of, with an extra song, its all milking the fans tbh.

For me the worst one has to be Slipknot, I love slipknot, but it was way too early to be doing that

girls aloud "ten" was a pointless release in retrospect, apart from the new songs. they really should have just released another album, but they left it too late to return.

Britney seems to have 2 new greatest hits albums out each year. Cash ins like this must cost more to produce than they earn back. Crazy.

She's had a few now, hasn't she? I don't own any of them as I have her albums with all the singles on them. I downloaded the three songs from My Prerogative I didn't have. I suppose they're handy for casual fans but for hardcore fans like me they're a waste of money.

Yeh im a massive Britney fan but I agree with you. She released her 1st one in 2004 after her 4th album which back then I thought was ridiculas but now that's normal. Then she released another one in 2009 after JUST TWO more albums!!!

I suppose you could argue that they're not pointless if enough people buy them.

What I don't like are the budget 'best of' compilations that are released for certain artists. Usually the artist will already have had a greatest hits album released prior to this and these budget compilations often leave out some of the more 'expensive' tunes (rights issues) and usually have plenty of album track/b-side filler to make up the shortfall. It's also obvious that the artist has had little or no involvement in these releases.

Jamelia, however she herself admitted it was ridiculous and was a contractual obligation.

Britney Spears- The Singles Collection i understand it was to celebrate 10 years in the business but with many omissions and 1 new track and after onlyy two new albums no but then again GH:MP was rediculously early too.

Christina Aguilera- Way way way way way way too early.

Celine Dion- All The Way, less a GH more a new album completely pointless.

P!nk- Her greatest hits was abyysmal i waited so long and there were too many omissions and far too many non single replacements.

Sandi Thom!! Not many people could name another song apart from I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker

And the new JLS one looks shocking - copy and paste job it seems

I'll take another tack.

Santana's Greatest Hits is pretty pointless because Abraxas is a better album.

A lot of "Greatest Hits" albums are an easy way of fulfilling "contractual obligations".

Others are put out by greedy record companies, keen to cash in on an old band, who've moved labels and become more successful.

I saw the cover of that and thought it looked as though it was done in MS Paint. Must've cost all of 5p to make I could do better with a blank CD and a CD burner

Samantha Mumba, for some unknown reason, has a greatest hits album, despite seemingly only having ever released one album. A truly pointless GH release.

McFly were forced by their label to release their first greatest hits after just 3 studio albums and 3 and a half years of singles.

On the other hand, how come after 7 albums and countless singles, Rihanna is yet to release a greatest hits album.

Perhaps she's doing it the old fashioned way, waiting til the end of her career (or before a career break) to release it.

The Crazy Frog had a greatest hits album?! What was it, a CD of pre-iPhone mobile phone ringtones masquerading as music?
