My daughter's iPhone 4S fell and the screen is now broken, although the phone still works OK

I assumed it would be a simple case of buying a new screen, maybe on ebay or somewhere ... but it seems more complicated than that ... more expensive too.

I asked at a local mobile repair shop in town today and was quoted £45

The chap said the glass is joined with the LCD, so both need replaced, hence the high price.

Is this about the right price ?

thank you

Sounds about right to me.

Screens cost about that so if somebody's offering to fit it for that price, bite their hand off.

sounds good to me to.

I paid about £30 when I broke the glass on my 3GS a few years back.

to protect the glass in the future I recommend this case

but you might have trouble getting a young female to go with these cases even in the hard to get 'girly' colours. I got one when I got my 4s, and to takes lots of kocks and drops and throwing about.

£45 is dirt cheap for a screen replacement these days. Even doing the work myself, replacing an entire screen on my phone costs over £100 just for the actual display component.

For glass-only (i.e. not replacing the whole screen) the parts run between £10 and £25 plus it's pretty hard work so labour charge of £30-50 is reasonable.

An apple store would charge £159 although you would come out with a new (refurbished) phone rather than a repaired one. If warranty is still a consideration this may still be worth looking at as a 3rd party repair would invalidate the warranty whereas a replacement from Apple preserves the existing warranty or gives you 3 months if there is less than 3 months still to run or the warranty has already expired.

If the phone is out of warranty then you should bite the shops hand off as others have said as it is a good price for a screen repair.
