Is this 50th Anniversary focusing on the Time War too much?

I'm worried that it's going to feel like the 7th anniversary, TBH. So far, it all seems to be based around the Time War, which is not the appropriate way to celebrate 50 years.

I hope they return to Coal Hill school or Foreman's junkeyard or something like that. Just to make it clear that we're celebrating the classics as well. So far it hasn't felt like we're celebrating the old series, just the last seven years. Hopefully the episode will prove me wrong.

I think the point is that the Time War is the bridge between the Classic and New series: it's what happened 'while we were away' (especially if we count the 96 movie as 'Classic'). That's why it works so well, in my view, as it can connect the two up.

I agree with those who think that this episode might be used to bring the Time Lords back in permanently, which will also allow for a lot more connections to be made to the classic series in future.

If you are right about that, then it's very good.

It does feel that way, but I've a feeling the Time War is just a mcguffin - I think that Hurt and the Time War is more to do with bridging the gap between the two series and we're possibly going to get something celebrating classic Who and the older Doctors later in the episode once the War Doctor mystery has been resolved.

I think this is the perfect time to focus on the Time War! With Matt's Doctor I think up until recently the Time War was put on the bench in terms of significance in the series, it was certainly more present a theme in Chris and David's series, we haven't had much of it in the recent series now it builds back up again, and events unfold there, we finally get to see the link between old and new etc.

And lets face it, every time we've seen Gallifrey in the show it's been epic, in the 50th I expect to be blown away, I just hope that what we see of the Time War is as epic and scary as I imagined it to be!

It may have been epic in the 2005+ series, but Gallifrey was frequently considerably less than epic in the old series... Arc Of Infinity being one the worst offenders and although the Death Zone in The Five Doctors was sort of impressive in a Welsh hillside kind of way, the interiors were very flat and boring. Like being stuck in a very dull waiting room.

And you'd think being Time Lords they'd have done away with waiting!

The Night of the Doctor minisode made me want a whole new series based entirely on the Time War (if not multiple series)..it could be their Torchwood replacement. I'd love to see the whole thing played out.

I think the fact the fiftieth is focussing on one of the if not the greatest bit of unseen Who legend is entirely appropriate. It is also a suitably epic setting. What else would you want?! Some space politics being hammered out in a welsh quarry?

I like it!

Doctor Who: Time War - starring Paul McGann as The Doctor

Star Trek managed to show several series alongside each other and no-one got confused, I'm sure DW could do it as well.

Good point I've been thinking a similar thing myself. Time War is suppose to be time locked. Meaning nothing can get in or out. Except from the dalek who went crazxy at the end of S4.I get why it was painfull for him and the worse thing he ever did. He lost his home ,race and family. He must of had very good reasons for sacraficing all that. So if they suddenly start changing history just because he feels guilty what was the point ?. If he has the power to do that why not rescue Amy and Rory from dying of old age in past New York ?.He could also while he is at it rescue his beloved wife from being a undead data ghost trapped in a libray database for all eternity (or untill the power runs out). Remember what 9 said Rose in Fathers Day ?."My planet died ,my people do you think it never occued to me to go back and save them ?". Looking forward to DOTD next saturdays 50th anniversay whatever happens.

What exactly do you want them to focus on?

It's the story basis for it.

People moan about anything it seems. It's the 50th, that more than anything tells you how long the show's been on air. But the show is all about change too and setting the show up to continue going forward.

The Time War is something we have a lot of unanswered questions for and affects the entirety of the show classic and modern. The perfect story basis for an anniversary episode.

Would people really want an episode that is basically a cast reunion, whereby introducing all previous doctors and the dozens of companions that joined them with no time for anything else or an actual story to enjoy?

It's good to do so, as it's been, don't talk about the Time War, like it is something that shouldn't be talked about.

Thats a good point its a gap that hasnt been bridged yet.
The stepping into the timeline thing from TNOTD, was a great way for 11 to get back there and to bring it all up.
