Paso Music tonight
Surely that was a record or did they augment the DA band with extra musicians ? Sure sounded great.

I have just watched it again to try & work out if it was the band but you can't see them.
I think it must have been a recording. |

It sounded like the original record to me. Not sure if they've done this before, but they've done it on DWTS quite a few times for instrumental songs.

Well that's what I thought too. I know there are lots of rules about recordings & things on live TV. Perhaps as it was Blackpool & more room they had more musicians, but we never got to see them really. I would love to know

Should have used the Wurlitzer for that truly authentic Blackpool Tower ambiance.
I have a nice rendition of Carmen extracts performed on a theatre organ. Well actually,it uses highly detailed samples of an organ played via a computer using the Hauptwerk software. |

Hopefully it will happen more often, there are some songs that are simply not suitable for 'Dave Arch and his wonderful orchestra'.because the singers can't do them justice.
Agreed, sometimes it's truly cringe-worthy. I've no objection to records being used instead sometimes. |

![]() Unfortunately they hadn't invented records when the piece was written. ![]() Here is Dave Arch (and the dancers). Mainly several horns and flutes and various drums - most of them synthesised of course. Pretty good rendition. I'll download it for my ringtone ![]() http://youtu.be/7ONCE5aGfaQ Here is another "cover" http://youtu.be/33-0Ao-5DsM |

Are we sure the band aren't under 'orders' from the BBC to say that? Their orchestra doesn't seem big enough to recreate that. Maybe they had some digital assistance or something.

I didn't realise Andre Rieu and his orchestra where on the show. I wonder did some of them help in the playing .

One of our twitter friends, Jan, asked a questions, actually a few were raised. I’ll have a go at answering. Firstly, the great thing about this show, and the BBC, is the music is played by musicians, live, all the dances and pro dances are played live, by us. Jan, asked if Susanna and Kevin’s ‘Carmen’ was a recording? The answer as you can see from what I’ve said is no. It’s a sort of backhanded complement, but I’m sure you can imagine how we feel when people don’t believe we’re playing. Especially when you know how hard everyone works to make it sound as good as possible. Catrin and Henry asked about our brass line-up, and did we have any extra members? The answer to that is no, it was the usual band line-up this week, 3 Trumpets, 2 Trombones, 3 woodwind, percussion, drums, bass, 2 guitars, 2 keyboards, 4 singers and Dave (who plays whatever’s missing, this week extra percussion). The reason it sounds so good, apart from the excellent playing of course, and the sound boys mixing, is Dave’s incredible arranging skills. He is well used to arranging for orchestras, on movies and all kinds of classical albums by all kinds of artistes, as well as pop and rock sessions. That skill on this occasion is to make 15 musicians sound like 60, and it would seem he has been successful, again. He is a very private and modest bloke who just gets on with things, he’s not one to push himself forward or make a big deal about what he does, gets embarrassed when he gets a name check, but he’s the best around by a country mile! I’m aloud to ‘big him up’ as he is my mate, he won’t do it himself and he is to busy to read this blog, so I won’t get a telling off! Thanks for the questions Jan, Catrin and Henry, and thanks for being interested in what we’re doing back there in the shadows. Your support on twitter, and I’m told elsewhere, is VERY much appreciated. Every week we are sent an instrument list, what we need to bring, it come from Dave, when he’s finished the arrangements, to the copyist (John Baker) to the musicians contractor (Cathy Giles) to us. This week list is below. Drums Brett Morgan- Drums + electronic kit + orchestral bass drum Bass Trevor Barry- Bass + Upright Guiatrs John Parricelli- Electric, Acoustic, Banjo, Spanish Paul Dunne- Electric, Acoustic, Nylon Woodwind Phil Toadd- Alto sax + Flute Jamie Talbot- Tenor Sax + Clarinet + Flute + Piccolo flute Dave Bishop – Tenor sax + Baritone + Clarinet + Flute Trumpets Simon Gardner – Trumpet + mutes Tom Rees-Roberts - Trumpet + mutes Craig Wild - Trumpet + mutes Trombones Pete Beachill – Tenor + mutes Andy Wood – Tenor (with plug) + mutes + Tuba Percussion Frank Ricotti – Djembe, Shakers, Samba whistle, Bongos, Congas, Mark Tree, Timbales, Agogo, Triangle, Tamb, Cowbell, Castanets, Ride Cym, Baby Crash, sparkly Bs, Cabasa, Snare drum, Glock, Xylo, Vibes, Timps |

It would be good to see the whole band centre stage rather than most of the celebrity singing / playing acts. And they would probably come mostly free so that would save money.
I can only think of Caro Emerald that I really preferred - but she could sing in front of them plus her own band of course. http://youtu.be/yvXzuXl5rgo |

Brilliant choice and hats off to the Dave Arch band. I want to hear more of this type of stuff. Have seen Abbey and Aljaz's Paso music this week and my heart sinks. If the reaction to Susanna and KFG'S proves anything, it's that the public absolutely love good music, given a chance to hear it.
