Should Strictly introduce a Classical week?

With the popularity of Susanna & Kevin's Paso to a classical song on Saturday, do you think there is scope to introduce a specific week where the celebrities all dance to a piece of classical music? They've used it on Dancing With The Stars and it was one of the few weeks that didn't make my teeth rot away due to saccharine choreography and music choices.

Even Bruce went off-piste (when doesn't he, actually) to say what a difference classical music made. A week of all classical songs could really turn in some fantastic performances (then again, it could be a load of pretentious sh*te. What do I know?)

Thoughts?

Defo.

Seen it on DWTS and as you say, a great leveller for the dancers and production team.

I love classical music! But may not work with forumites with reverse snobbery here...

I think a classical week would be lovely, what a great idea

sounds a good idea just cant envisage latin to classical (paso excepted)

I am all for that idea and while they are about it how about an appropriate music week too. That would be one where they selected tracks with the right rhythm, tempo and style for the dance radical or what?

Maybe traditional music for each dance then.

I think it's definitely worth doing. They drag out Halloween Week every year, but I really think Los Toreadors could stand a lot more repetition on Strictly than The Monster Mash, if that's not too controversial a view!

You could probably choreograph Viennese Waltz, American Smooth, Quickstep, Tango, Rumba & Argentine Tango to Classical music. In the US, they had Katherine Jenkins as a guest vocalist that week providing her voice to songs that required music (she was a contestant the following year so they had an unnamed artist do it, I think)

It could be a great week for when there are 8 or so left. My only concern is that it might lose viewers who would think sitting through 8 dances with Classical music would be "boring".

Classical simply means ' has stood the test of time' Latin Americans have been making and recording music every bit as much as Americans (US) and Europeans. There is a MASSIVE body of Latin American music going back 100 years or more which most people in the UK are completely oblivious to.

Fantastic idea.
Might need to be later in the series though when most of the poor dancers have been voted out.

Of course, Dave Arch's wonderful, wonderful singers might feel a bit redundant that week.

Bruce referred to "Traditional" music. i.e. music traditionally associated with Paso and by implication with other dances.

Salsafied classical music would be just as odd as pop music to salsa. Though I was there when this was recorded

You could probably get a Rumba out of one or two and an Argentine Tango (assuming that's considered Latin, I'm never sure where it stands)

This was how the Americans handled a classical Rumba

I think it's a lovely idea, but not everyone loves classical music so it could be a bit of a turn-off. A week of traditional dance music would be great though - no, traditional music doesn't have to sound like something from the 1930s!

Argentine Tango doesn't stand - it moves!

Or in the case of Strictly, wraps it's legs around it's partners head and talks a lot about sweaty gauchos!

Dancing to a 16th century English canon piece dressed as Ancient Greeks. Talk about hedging your bets.

Indeed And you forgot to mention chairs - it involves sitting on chairs!

I'd rather welcome a modern music week and a traditional music the rest of time. Or at least more often. Tango, argentine or ballroom or paso require traditional music IMO, with anything else they look odd. And it's similar with the other dances.

Ben's won't

Mostly on Strictly, particularly for male celebs, it consists of them standing whilst the female pro wraps herself round them

Traditional would cover both classical for ballroom, and Latin classical or traditional for the Latin.

And I would love to see the dances done 'straight' with appropriate music. Just for a week even.

I love classical music but could understand it wouldn't go down well with everyone but classical meaning traditional to the dance - as opposed to a song from the last 10 years or so - sounds a good idea.
As they seem to be rehatching the same songs over and over again it might actually remind them there is wealth of music to choose from the last 100 years or so.
