Cant work out whether to get a second hand nexus 4 for around £120 or a moto g for (£159).
Both are 16gb.

how can your suggestion be taken as serious when you don't know what the OP currently has.
It really depends on what you want OP. The Nexus 4 has a slightly larger screen and slightly better camera and may feel a bit more premium than the Moto G which is less slim and more plastic.
However, if those things don't matter to you, then I would just go with the newer device. Both devices are going to get Kitkat, so it really is down to personal preference.

How can we advise op if we don't know what they have now? Or what they want their phone to do?

I have an old htc hero which ive been using for a while now, wondering if the nexus 4 is going to get as many updates as the moto g - especially when the moto g is newer and looks to be far more popular...
The better camera and dc-hsdpa capability of the n4 is swaying me atm despite it being second hand.. although still slightly unsure.
Should also mention that i would be buying the n4 from someone i know so i know condition and how its been looked after.

Well, its a massive upgrade on a Hero in both meanings of the word.
So I doubt your questions are all that significant, especially as 'upgrades' are never quite what they seem.

If the N4 is a minter then the N4 is the much better phone, better hardware and possibly better software support, 4.4 is rolling out for it now, whether it gets the next version of Android is debatable, the hardware is certainly up for it, it is down to Google or not, at 18 months they may well say support ends, 3rd party devs will almost certainly be giving it some for a number of years should you want to go down that route.
The N4 is also supposed to have an improved battery chemistry that's good for 800 charges so that's not going to be an issue with it for a good while either.
