Neither. He's doing what his agent told him to do before he went in in order to maximise screen time but making an absolute meal of it.
The trouble with Essex is, whilst he's not quite so lamentably stupid that as a grown man he cannot tell the time without major assistance, he does lack the brainpower required to fool the viewers convincingly and/or in a remotely endearing way.
That entire segment was just cringeworthy television. I feel sorry for those connected with him more than anything. It can't be much fun watching an entire episode of something from behind a cushion.
You'd like to think that by playing the "thicko" card so badly he's ruined any chance he might of had of winning, but with predominantly teenage girls voting I'm not going to hold my breath.
