The fact that Eastenders hit the 8 million mark for the first time since March on Monday evening 18th November, overnight figures show.

Her return beats

Michael Moons murder
Phil Mitchells car crash
Peggys one off visit

Is the increase in viewers, evidence of the characters popularity?

Not necessarily. It could well be; but it could also be a simple coincidence. There's no way we'll ever know, really.

It's winter now, so ratings are supposed to be high now... People tuned in for Shirley's return to find out more about her. But yes, Shirley is popular.

Nah, it's just a sign that improving quality is keeping viewers gripped and making them tune in more regularly

Her last return didn't provide such a boost and she was away longer that time.

Combination of factors: Yes, people want to see her character, but, viewers always like EE when it has a 'gangster vibe' to it with a Mitchell involved.I also think for the past month, its defo been gradually getting better, so, word of mouth/internet general buzz. You also had DD's comments about ED, which generates its own buzz. All contributing factors.

Also, some people (who don't read DS!), maybe imagining that they were tuning in to find out Shirley dead/held hostage & were expecting a full on fight btwn Philf & Carly-Carl.

There's no doubt that Shirley is a popular character and with her family coming in there is increased interest. The Carters are set to be an important family.

Shirley is a marmite character. Some people like her and some people don't...

The ratings have been climbing since Michaels murder.Even the press have started to notice the quality improving.

Not evidence that the two bit dirty finger nailed halitosis ridden lush is popular.

I'd imagine that's true for every character.

There's every doubt.
Why? Because you don't like her?

Of course some people are going to dislike her, same with every character.

Celeb Jungle got record figures as well . it's probably due to the cold .

If it were a warm summer's evening , then the likelihood of 8mil staying in to watch Shirley would be less

It was cold and miserable last night so people were indoors, we were out and there was hardly anyone about. I would be interested to see whether other programmes at that time had higher viewing figures as well though.

Increased interest I would say. Whether you like the character of Shirley or not her coming back stirred people's interest so they watched to see how it played out, simple as that to me.

The show is finally improving and maintaining consistency.

That's why the ratings are improving.

I do think she's a popular character but I don't know if the ratings always reflect a character's popularity.

Shirley could be popular. I don't know and won't rule it out (for the record this point does not reflect my personal view of the character or anything Phirley-related, in case I'm called out on it for some reason).

However, I also can't rule out the possibility that there are people out there who tuned in to find out what happened to her for one reason or another, and perhaps find out what happened between Phil and Carl.

Although the crash and Peggy return came at the height of the ratings slump EE has been suffering and MM death was still during faltering viewing figures!!
