Yes, if in doubt, join that other disruptive Kid at the back in the class.

Considering you 'don't have the foggiest'/ don't want to understand scaling apps to screen, I slightly worry about your Apple developer skills.

BTW You are the one describing lag in the Android keyboard Jonner. Was the keyboard lagging trying to catch a bus?”

Sorry still haven't got a clue what your actually trying to say. I think it was another poster who mentioned lag on Android keyboards, can't say I've noticed it. I guess you're trying to make some sort of comment on the difference between the way an app is coded in Android v iOS for tablets ?

Anyway yes iPads will run iPad apps, which are applications that are specifically targeted to the iPad screen size and use user interface elements that are specificity optimised for the iPad screen which I think works very well for the larger tablet size.

As you know an iPad will run any iPhone app but will scale it.

You can also code an app that will work on both iPhone and iPad but you have to do some work to make the User interface elements are appropriate to both devices.

With Android it's up to the developer how to approach it. It does scale to a degree but you have to take into account differing aspect ratios especially if your doing a game.

Also if you want to optimise an app for a bigger tablet then this would have to be coded for and can be a bit awkward. Personally I'd never really bother optimising for any Android tablet over 7 inches as the market here is too small.

The latest made up rumours from the web suggest a Cyber Monday release for a Nexus 10.2

Easy to upload onto Google Play for use on Android. If you are going to (have to) help her I'd go with Android.

I'm helping my neighbour with a email addy, new phone and tablet and told him straight that if he wants Apple he'll have to get somebody else to help him. I know the Android and Google ecophere and couldn't be bothered to learn another one.

They are all pretty similar - but your time is valuable.

So get her on Nexus 10.1 or 10.2 and then on a Nexus 4 phone at upgrade time.

Thanks henry, I am leaning towards waiting for the Nexus at this time but Mrs A will no doubt do the opposite of what I say

I'm put off the Kindle because of Amazon's own OS and I'm not comfortable rooting etc.

Well, in all honesty, that sounds like you only write for IOS.
Android apps are optimised anyway, the have to be for all screen resolutions. So if you write a proper Android app, you have done most of the donkey work even before you check the physical size.

And this supposed 'optimised for tablet' thing. What about hand size? It can't really be optimised for both child and adult hands in that strange one size fits all scenario.

I'd go for the ipad. I've had iPads since they came out and every time I look to change one the competition just doesn't compare to be honest.

There's not really much to learn as they are pretty intuitive for every day use, especially if the person using it will be primarily browsing the web, using email and playing a few games.

I recently bought an ipad air, upgrading from my mini and it's by far the best tablet I've ever used. Light and fast.

It is more expensive but I really do think its worth it. We still have 2 original iPads in our family that are used daily and have been for almost 4 years with absolutely no problems or need for support. I'm not an apple disciple but when it comes to ease of use and quality I've not yet seen anything to beat an ipad.

The Nexus 10 is out of stock on Play but unlike the 5, there is less hint of a new release date.

That other 2K device, the Nook HD+ is back at John Lewis. You can get the 32GB c/w a 2 year warranty for £150. Its not 4:3 but that means less of the black bars on video.
I'm not really sure, apart from maybe for gamers, whether competitors gadgets are worth triple or double the price.

With the 10 already being 2.6K I slightly wonder if the new 10 will be 4K.
We already have 720p(1.3K) 4.3" phones, 1080p(2K) 4.7" phones so obviously 4K at 10" has been very doable for quite a good while now.

This.

My original iPad sees daily use (more for Minecraft these days, natch), gave it an overnight charge Friday night, unplugged Sat morning, 24 hours later (on standby) battery still showing 100%. For a 1.0 device, it's remarkable.
