This is basically tegra 4 in a 2012 nexus 7 shell sort of, 1GB ram, same resolution as 2012 nexus.

But the benchmarks its getting are extremely good, demolishes 2013 nexus 7 and on same level as note 10.1 2013 and any other device out there.

Its £180 at currys but £20 cashback and £5 quidco:

Poor screen though for the money

Still a much better device than the 2013 Nexus 7 - one heck of a lot faster, has an SD slot.

I've been wonder which "cheaper" tablet to buy my eldest, he primarily wants it for gaming. I know that everything he's played so far would work fine on the Hudl, but this Tegra Note seems like a better bet.

Why don't you look at Ideal World shopping channel. They are doing a Hanspree 10.1 Quad Core IPS screen tablet. 2 year guarantee 1 year Panda security and stand for £149.99 and over 4 interest free payments. 16Gb expandable HDMI ports.
Sister ordered one and very very pleased with it!!

I can't believe that a 720 p screen is now described as a poor screen. Yes there are better resolution screens out there, but 720p is not something I'd describe as poor.

I disagree. it's very reasonably priced. you can't have everything.

With less than half the screen pixels, quite obviously many benchmarks have to do less than half the work.

It is exactly why the iPad Mini supposedly felt as fast as the iPad 4.

I didn't say it was poor - I said it was poor for the money that you only get that screen. If I pay £180 for a tablet I'd expect a full HD one.

Hadn't thought of that - would certainly explain some of the extra speed it has.

Apart from the nook HD+ there aren't any other Full HD tablets you can get for £180. The new nexus 7 is £199 as is the new kindle fire. Are there any other sub £199 full HD tablets? The nook HD/ HD+ is sold at a ridiculously low price as B &N are a sinking ship trying to get rid of their stock.

That would rule out ever buying an iPhone.

Quite obviously, it is not the be and end all.

The CNET review called it a 'low res screen'. I think these reviewers are getting ridiculous with pixel density counts again. I knew it would creep back when the ipad mini went 'retina'. I have a 2012 Nexus 7 and the 720p screen on a 7” tablet is crisp and clear.

Exactly. 720p is fine enough. Not low res at all.

I'd rather pay £20 than make do with the lower resolution.

Not to me it wasn't - I much prefer the screen on my Nook HD+ and would not want to go back to anything less.

The screen is such an important part of a tablet I can see no reason why anyone would not want the very best they can get for their cash and if spending £20 more for a better screen then so be it.

to be honest, I don't really bother about resolutions, I look for speed

I'd suggest looking at the Ideal World customer feedback on their website where you can read many accounts of unhappy experiences. The problem is that Ideal World aren't too discerning about the tablets that they sell and so they end up selling some mediocre to poor ones which, not surprisingly, upsets customers who want something stable and reliable. They are about the very last place I would buy a tablet from.

Good for you and please do give us feedback about this tablet - cherry or lemon ?

£20 more, but less storage flexibility and slower - in part down to the screen. This Tegra 4 tablet will (probably) make a much better gaming device.

Sure, having full HD is "nice", but its not required. 720p video can look absolutely stunning on the original N7 (heck, 720p video can look stunning on my old Playbook).

And I'm still trying to figure out why everyone seems to be wanting the same resolution screen on their phone/tablet as they do on their TV at home.

I've one of those Rockchip 1.8GHz quad core Chinese tablets. Bizarrely it's not as fast nor stable as my apparently much slower 2012 Nexus 7! Go figure.

It looks excellent. If I was on the lookout for a new tablet I'd be considering it.

If buying as a primarily a 'games device' I would agree that a lower resolution is more likely to suit.

It is a decent resolution so may not impact on other uses too much.

It will barely make any difference for other uses - many (well, iPad owners) would argue that the main thing holding it back for reading/browsing is the aspect ratio. Film playback - honestly, no real world difference between 1024x600, 1280x800 and 1920x1080 when viewed on a 7" screen.

The lower resolution screen, along with the possibly faster processor will make this one of the best gaming tablets on the market.

That would mean a less than 1 MP photo looks the same as a 2MP photo. And a map showing 12cm by 8cm of detail looks the same as one showing 19cm by 12 cm of detail.

That sounds barely feasible.
