edit: found this elsewhere: seems to say it all.
Samsung provided Galaxy S II users 2 major Android updates (Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean), a device which was released in April of 2011 and initially shipped with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), and finally ended its support in May 2013 Last edited by scooby76 : 20-11-2013 at 00:31. |

If your S2 is out of warranty (or you don't mind invalidating it), the new Cyanogenmod Installer app is now probably the easiest way to root and put the latest cyanogenmod ROM on your phone (there are ways of getting the phone back to factory settings by flashing a stock image but I'll not cover that here). I believe the S2 is a supported device.
Do some research on this app and watch YouTube walkthroughs to gain confidence if you are prepared to proceed with this upgrade path. I'd managed to get my even older Galaxy S to 4.3.1 by flashing cyanogenmod and it's running very well indeed. Once cyanogenmod is flashed, you can update from the phone similar to the standard OTA updates. My friend has an S2 and has 4,1.x on it (via the official route) so I'd be surprised if you aren't at least at that version. Incidentally, your CSC (Customer Sales Code) does also affect what firmware Kies offers - as I found out initially before I embarked on the custom ROM route. |

a) You do not need to root a phone to update it, in fact, you need to run an update to root it b) Rooting prevents OTA updates from working. |

That's incorrect.

The point I'm trying to make is flashing a custom rom != rooting.

If your phone is working fine then I wouldn't bother with the custom rom scene. |
