Mine came down last night as well, I noticed just as i was putting the phone on to charge.

Now do anyone know how to get rid of the file and the nag in my notifications? I don't want to update.

You won't be able to get rid of the notification as far as I know.

But why on Earth do you not want to update? KitKat has loads of security enhancements on top the new features. If you don't like the new UI you can just change it. This isn't iOS.

installed by sideloading via the OTA URL.
fairly straight forward if you're handy with the command prompt (and can read simply instructions).
upgraded with no problems.

then went and installed the GEL and the on-screen icons are just too big on the nexus 4.

So I have noticed, for goodness sake ( that is pretty tame, from what I really thought ) the only way is to root the phone, which I don't really want to do.

Why do these companies do this, makes it difficult for people not to update? i wonder if resetting the phone will get rid of it.

i don't like the look of the new message and hang out crap being int he same place, I have tried other messaging apps, but not that impressed with the ones I have tried.

I also like how my phone is now, it works and i know where things are.

that's nothing to do with kitkat.
and besides, you can still use the existing stock messaging app if you choose to.

So why earth did you get a Nexus 4? Or Android come to that? It is easy to use alternatives to any of the stock apps.

I forced the update and I am loving the KitKat. Hangouts is fantastic and after side loading the GEL the hands free voice control is very nice.

I got the Nexus 4, because it was a good price for what it offered. I like the Nexus and i like the features, but I got it set up the way I like it.

I know you can use alternative apps. i like the SMS app that I am using now, but if I update to kitkat, then google Hangout and combined SMS app will replace it.

Hangout may be fantastic if you use it, I don't and only know a couple of people who do. SMS does the job and everyone I know that have a mobile phone can use SMS, even the one with a old nokia 3310.

Over the last few months i have been asked to install whats app, Hangouts or use it, BBM and a few others. for goodness sake.

My N4 update arrived in the last hour. Phone seems to be working fine but I haven't noticed that much different yet.

Kitkat doesn't change anything. You can get the AOSP (stock) messaging app from XDA and install it. Kitkat even has an option in Settings to change the default SMS app, so it's not an issue at all.

You can also change the launcher if you don't like that either. Like I said before, this isn't iOS, the experience is much more flexible.

I was chatting to a mate last night and he installed it on his N4 and he said the phone seems a bit snappier. He have got no problem with the Hangout thing, because he uses it.

My N4 auto-updated, and I still have the stock messaging app, although I did install Textra a week days ago as my default messaging app..

And I can indeed switch to the old messaging app if I want (via a change in Settings)

it comes as a standalone update.
i had the new hangouts weeks before kitkat was pushed out.

you are confusing kitkat update with hangouts app update.
the hangouts update is separate to kitkat, it just happens that the updated app is included in kitkat.

does installing kitkat remove the old stock sms app?
and is there an official way to install the old sms app?
and if you install it unofficially does it support the new API for sms apps?

didn't for me

it's just an app like any other, so if you can find it you can install it - but it doesn't get removed.

and if you install it unofficially does it support the new API for sms apps?
the API support is in the OS i believe, not the app?

The API is in the OS of course but the ability to interact with it has to be built in to the app.

I know that kit kat is just a update for the OS and all the rest are apps, I know this. Everything on smart phones are apps, that is how they work.

As you said the hangout update is included with Kit kat, but the problem is when these apps are included you can't get rid of them, they are still there even if you use another app.

Downloading another App to do the job that the one was using is madness, and even more memory is taken from the phone. don't forget that the N4 memory can not be updated, no micro SD port.

the stock messaging app supported it in 4.3 so i would say there would be no problem then.

i had the new hangouts on 4.3 and was set which messaging app i want to use in system settings.

the stock messaging app is still there, so not sure what your problem is really.

Did for my mate, can't access the old SMS at all now.

Um
the API support is in the OS i believe, not the app?
but as flagpole says, the ability to communicate have to be in the app.

I just pretend I know what yo are talking about I been reading up on API, support and what it is

It's as you state - a combined app. Hangouts was updated separately and released to Google Play some time ago, my N4 downloaded it last week as an update. It worked as a messaging app without KitKit.

But I still have the old Messaging app that works, so maybe others do as well. In that case, all that seems to have happened is that Hangouts has been expanded to include messaging (presumably some people who use Hangouts will appreciate that move).

I know i will have to update at some point since google in their wisdom decided that for me. they are doing a lot of that lately, getting peoples backs up
I can't see what they have done in order to get anyone's back up, not least yours.
