Mine came down last night as well, I noticed just as i was putting the phone on to charge.
Now do anyone know how to get rid of the file and the nag in my notifications? I don't want to update. |

installed by sideloading via the OTA URL.
fairly straight forward if you're handy with the command prompt (and can read simply instructions). upgraded with no problems. then went and installed the GEL and the on-screen icons are just too big on the nexus 4. |

You won't be able to get rid of the notification as far as I know.
Why do these companies do this, makes it difficult for people not to update? i wonder if resetting the phone will get rid of it. Quote:

I also like how my phone is now, it works and i know where things are. |

So I have noticed, for goodness sake ( that is pretty tame, from what I really thought ) the only way is to root the phone, which I don't really want to do.

I forced the update and I am loving the KitKat. Hangouts is fantastic and after side loading the GEL the hands free voice control is very nice.

So why earth did you get a Nexus 4? Or Android come to that? It is easy to use alternatives to any of the stock apps.
I know you can use alternative apps. i like the SMS app that I am using now, but if I update to kitkat, then google Hangout and combined SMS app will replace it. Quote:

Hangout may be fantastic if you use it, I don't and only know a couple of people who do. SMS does the job and everyone I know that have a mobile phone can use SMS, even the one with a old nokia 3310. Over the last few months i have been asked to install whats app, Hangouts or use it, BBM and a few others. for goodness sake. |

My N4 update arrived in the last hour. Phone seems to be working fine but I haven't noticed that much different yet.

Kitkat doesn't change anything. You can get the AOSP (stock) messaging app from XDA and install it. Kitkat even has an option in Settings to change the default SMS app, so it's not an issue at all.
You can also change the launcher if you don't like that either. Like I said before, this isn't iOS, the experience is much more flexible. |

And I can indeed switch to the old messaging app if I want (via a change in Settings) |

My N4 auto-updated, and I still have the stock messaging app, although I did install Textra a week days ago as my default messaging app..
And I can indeed switch to the old messaging app if I want (via a change in Settings) I know i will have to update at some point since google in their wisdom decided that for me. they are doing a lot of that lately, getting peoples backs up |

So what is this about Kitkat combining messenger and hangouts then?
I know i will have to update at some point since google in their wisdom decided that for me. they are doing a lot of that lately, getting peoples backs up the hangouts update is separate to kitkat, it just happens that the updated app is included in kitkat. |

you are confusing kitkat update with hangouts app update.
the hangouts update is separate to kitkat, it just happens that the updated app is included in kitkat. and is there an official way to install the old sms app? and if you install it unofficially does it support the new API for sms apps? |

the hangouts update is separate to kitkat, it just happens that the updated app is included in kitkat. As you said the hangout update is included with Kit kat, but the problem is when these apps are included you can't get rid of them, they are still there even if you use another app. Downloading another App to do the job that the one was using is madness, and even more memory is taken from the phone. don't forget that the N4 memory can not be updated, no micro SD port. |

The API is in the OS of course but the ability to interact with it has to be built in to the app.
i had the new hangouts on 4.3 and was set which messaging app i want to use in system settings. |

it's just an app like any other, so if you can find it you can install it - but it doesn't get removed. UmQuote:

but as flagpole says, the ability to communicate have to be in the app.I just pretend I know what yo are talking about I been reading up on API, support and what it is

But I still have the old Messaging app that works, so maybe others do as well. In that case, all that seems to have happened is that Hangouts has been expanded to include messaging (presumably some people who use Hangouts will appreciate that move). Quote:

I can't see what they have done in order to get anyone's back up, not least yours.
