Then don't. There are many apps that can overlay network activity indicators anywhere you want on the display.
That's great, thanks. Any recommendations? Preferably I'd like the indication viewable near the signal strength indicator .

Well there's one called Cool Tool and one called Network Monitor Mini, both of which I use. They are both overlays so you can position them anywhere you want on the screen - though one disadvantage is they won't move if your signal indicator moves.
