Is it not possible to connect this tablet to a tv using the usb lead
I connected to my tv's usb socket the tv recognised it but the tablet gave some message about downloading some software but for ios or Windows only ?

Any ideas ?

No that isn't possible as far as I am aware, I think that the only way of doing it, would be by purchasing the allshare cast dongle.

I have a 2013 LG Smart TV connected to my home wi-fi, and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 which is also connected to the home wifi.

The first time I tried to watch a YouTube video whilst the TV was on, hey presto there was YouTube playing through the TV without me doing anything. Presumably they are talking to each other through the wifi.

I can play any of my videos, photos, etc, on my Tab through the TV.

I think that means 'physically' connect. Not wireless.
