And so it begins...

http://www.gaystarnews.com/article/j...gay-slur191113

He's giving Steve Brookstein a run for his money in the how to ruin your career like a shot stakes. Lots of places seem to be reporting on the homophobic comment. I thought maybe it would have blown over...just maybe. Oh well, serves him right.

Is it wrong that I'm loving every moment of this? I might have loved his album but when someone is as nasty as James Arthur clearly is, they deserve a big fall. He must be setting some kind of record though in how soon and quickly a person can single-handledly destory their own career.

If he was doing self destruct due to drink and drugs, I would have some sympathy for him, but as this is borne out of arrogance, bigotry and nastiness towards other people, I am just enjoying what appears to be a huge dose of karma being visited on young Mr Arthur.

What puzzles me about him is that surely he must realise how lucky he is to go from where he was in life before XF to where he is now?! I haven't been in as bad a situation as he has in life, but the bad stuff that I have been through made me realise whenI came through it that I should be a bit more careful and not take things for granted. I mean, if I was him I would have been so careful what I said from day one for fear of ending up poor and homeless again. Some if the things he was writing on twitter to people were disgusting.

I've been watching this develop as well and I must say I have to agree with you

I don't mind his music, but he does seem to be intent on pissing off as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time possible so he's only got himself to blame.

What amuses me is how such a sour faced and humourless git managed to win what is effectively a popularity contest. He's no rebel or anti-hero, just a miserable sod

His sense of entitlement is too strong - he wasn't grateful for the opportunity, he thought it was his right, due to his belief that his talent is immense.

Maybe it is an indication of how poor the rest of the competition was. I watched final night, and despite loathing him, as he had already had the twitter spat with Matt, I couldn't deny he had more stage presence than either Jahmene or Chris M.

I don't think his sales' fall reflects any comment he made. I would say that's more the true extent of his popularity and the quality of his work.

I agree. He hasn't done himself any favours but that article stretches the facts to suit the agenda. It didn't fall from 2 last week it fell from 9, and it's continued as you'd expect. We might as well ask who Gaga has offended this week to fall similarly between week 1 and 2. And did Matt Cardle offend the entire nation the week after his latest album?

Arthur probably doesn't have much of a future, but if not he won't be the first winner to struggle.

Matt Cardle is an independent and it is his third album, without the juggernaut of press and promotion that JA has had spent on him. As has been stated previously, Matt Cardle debut album went from Number 2 to number 4 and sold more than James Arthur in the three week period. Compare album number 3 in a couple of years if JA releases his third album within a three year time frame and as an independent artist.

This thread is not about Matt, just about the fall of James Arthur. By the way, I think Gaga has released and sold a few more albums than your James, so again not a like for like comparison. What are the sales figures for Union J and I am genuinely asking in a positive way?

Exactly! If he weren't one of the most disgusting people I've ever known of to grace the world of showbiz then I'd actually feel at least a bit sorry for him. But he is so nasty and arrogant he deserves all he gets. Vile little man.

he's not my James i'm not a fan i just prefer the less ingratiating characters so i defend his right to be an idiot.

You keep going on about the indie label and no promotion etc. but there are many albums from previously unheard of artists that appear from nowhere without promo then spread via word of mouth. It even happened in the old days but in the internet age there's no reason why news of a release can't spread. And it may be his 3rd album but it's his third in 2 yrs, it's hardly long enough to have been forgotten - that's more rapid than 1D's releases who are often accused of rushing albums out to cash in while they can.

But ok, if you don't like Matt as a comparison try Little Mix - who have they offended to drop similarly between week 1 and 2?

I could go on

OK, but how many sales has JA lost owing to his twitter and interviewing skills?

how can we know?

maybe a lot, or maybe he'd have sold less if he hadn't caused a controversy, these things work in strange ways on a strange public.

Who'd have thought Miley whatsits's universally ridiculed twerkiness would have boosted her career, as a different example?

Wait, he was having a go at people - and someone who was basically his peer - before he even won?

I think James Arthur desperately needs to see a therapist. It's not normal to be so full of hatred.

If he really was "just" an idiot then I wouldn't care too much but he has proven over and over that he is a genuinely nasty piece of work and a disturbing person. You aren't defending his right to be an idiot, you're defending his "right" to be a sexist homophobe and God knows what else. Why?

i'm not sure

i think its cos he was the first solo winner who didn't make me want to kick the telly and shoot myself or a passer-by. I couldn't care less who he offends or his career trajectory or his music, i'm just less annoyed by those who don't try too hard to be appealing..... for some reason. Don't ask me why

The thing is, you can be less of a try hard without being an absolute arsehole. I do find it worrying that being nasty seems to be seen as keeping it real - see The Wanted who appear to lash out at everyone in the name of being edgy.

If controversy was going to be positive for him, then it would reflect in his sales. He came in at number 2, mainly by pre-orders. His hidden talent of dormant resentment stayed fairly under the radar until he and his management company thought it might be beneficial to allow his personality to assist the promotion of the album. Worked well, sales did not go up and how many media outlets are either laughing at him or refusing to promote him?

With regards Miley Cyrus, how many years has she been in the business? It might have got her headlines, but in the long run will she find this period negative or positive, with regards developing her career. Look at Amy Whinehouse, did not do her much good, when the story took over the talent.

I wouldn't say it is, there's many ways of being real, Adele for e.g manages it perfectly without offending anyone. We tend to know real when we see it however its presented along the nice to nasty spectrum

We all make our psychological judgements about people, what some see as nasty some see as defensive belligerence, what some see as pleasant some see as duplicity. We're all free to psycho-analyse people as we see it.

probably because his album is rubbish. He sings like he is about to vomit into the microphone. Don't think the gay comment made any difference

You make him sound brave and quirky standing up against the grey suits, as opposed to a Syco product willing to do anything to get up the greasy pole and now being controlled by 'HQ'.
You talk abut defensive belligerence as if he's the perennial victim. How about aggressive belligerence? How about the attacks he launched on Matt Cardle who never abused him or attacked him? What he was doing was trying to humiliate an easy target to look cool and edgy; a former XF winner perceived from his lofty heights to have failed because he was no longer with Cowell. So of course the JA way is to sneer and belittle to general applause from his fans who think this is the way to be. But it only goes one way ... people who dare to stand up for themselves or attack him are 'haters and bullies', but when he launches at people he's 'keeping it real'. He then runs scared when he's called on it by anyone who can damage him in any way. Is that a man to admire?
For that matter is homophobia keeping it real? His instinct when reaching for an insult (and he reaches for many) is to imply or accuse someone of being gay, (and a 'predatory' gay at that) because to him very clearly being gay is a really terrible thing for another man to be. And lets not go into his misogyny and the way he treats/tries to use his pretty young fans on social media. His actions and his own words condemn him, which is why the backlash against him has been considerable.

I never wholly bought his sob story to be honest. He slept on a mate's sofa (just the once according to his mum) and stayed in a bedsit (boo f*cking hoo, you didn't like where you lived). He slagged off Saltburn, but my aunt and uncle live there and it's quite a nice place. So far, so average. Especially when the real, horrific story of Jahmene was there in contrast that year.

Also it really grated me that he claimed to be shy and nervous around women, but continuously flirted with Caroline on Xtra Factor. I know guys who are shy around women. They would probably literally wet themselves if they were placed on national live tv with an attractive woman.
