She currently has a Samsung Galaxy something (not sure of what the model is - it isn't a Galaxy S III or IV - it is an older smaller phone). Basically she uses it for texting, phone calls and ocassional internet surfing, basic games and taking the odd photo. We recently bought her a Samsung Galaxy tablet so she uses that more now for other stuff.

She doesn't like keep charging it and it has a problem where her photos keep "disappearing". They are still on the SD card but the Gallery keeps losing them.

So, which Android phone would people recommend for her? Needs to have:

- Big, clear screen
- Good battery life
- Camera

She is on 3's 123 PAYG plan so it needs to be SIM free.

Thanks.

Moto G looks like an ideal candidate.

why not consider a Windows Phone? Try a Nokia Lumia 625 (large screen, decent cam, 4G support) at a good price of around £160.

Or maybe a Lumia 820 (4g support, largish screen, but more powerful than the 625) around £180 or even less, changeable batteries too

I've got a Lumia 820 as a backup phone, they're great, and I think older people wouldn't have much problem using it.

Not as large a screen as a Galaxy S3, but the way Windows is designed, it's pretty easy to see stuff on it.

Worse phones and more expensive than the Moto G. And I don't think 4G is going to be a priority for the lady in question.

The Moto G just makes all those Windows phones below the top end look disappointing.

Don't bother with Windows Phone. I think the Moto G is the best bet. Powerful and affordable Android phone, guaranteed an update to KitKat 4.4 and there are loads of colourful accessories and covers to go with it.

Obviously, she just needed a photo/photo cloud app installing.

It almost sounds like Gallery is getting reset after a flat battery or something.

I also recommend the Lumia 625. As has been mentioned, it has a nice large clear screen and can be had for not much more than £100 now.

People in the thread talk about Android being better than Windows Phone - it is silly to make a generic statement. In the context of OP's mum, Windows Phone may well be a better bet - she might find it easier to use with the simple UI and large hit targets. Automatic synchronisation of photos to Skydrive would be a valuable feature, especially when combined with a Windows PC where they can get automatically downloaded to too.

The data sense feature will be useful to someone with limited data (OP's mum is on PAYG), Here Drive with offline mapping for satnav, Nokia MixRadio with offline music playlists will also be valuable to someone on pay as you go.

In time, if OP's mum ends up caring a lot about photography etc, she might want to get the Nokia Lumia 1020 (it will probably be half today's price in about a year).

Are you saying Skydrive does not sync to Android properly?

Lack of full use of the current phone will mean lack of full use of the next phone and probably that tablet.

She needs sense of discovery encouragement. Photos are useful synced to both PC and tablet.
