I remember a whole load of hype surrounding this Shut Up And Dance track. What do stories do you have to share about memories of its release?

I remember it was supposed to be banned but then was allowed one day of commercial release only (was that true?) and that on the Monday I managed to get the last 7" copy in Woolworths. I was then almost immediatly offerd £10 cash for it but heard the 12" was changing hands in London for £100 - again, was that true?

Is it still banned?

Any memories and stories welcome. And how did it get to No.2 in the top 40 when it was only out for 1 day?

I remember kiss FM were really pushing it.. the majors would ignore sampling on the rave scene because it was mainly underground and didnt make much money. it was just an independent pressing and not meant to be a single, a DJ on kiss fm had like the only copy and it would get played every hour and it created a buzz for it. so it got released as a single and then quickly withdrawn when the majors decided to sue them when they realised it was going to be a big hit...it was a landmark in music sampling history.

i remember at the time liking there song called 'the green man' and the stuff they did with the ragga twins.

I also remember that shut up and dance had one of the crappiest album title and covers in history.

i've not listened to the track in a long time, but basically they sampled marc cohns walking in memphis without permission and released the single, they were instantly forced to withdraw the single and not press any more copies. the word about the ban got out so sales jumped through the roof with people grabbing a copy whilst they could, so the single then got to number 2 in the charts

there was then a remix released without the sample, and there was a later cd single with the sample where the proceeds went to charity

the band then got into more trouble as due to that uncleared sample they got their previous releases checked and got in trouble for all the other samples

i have the original 12", in fact it may be a white label copy, i think i have the remix and pretty sure i have the cd single too. it wasn't the kind of thing i'd normally play but it was very popular at the time and the hype over the banned sample made it moreso, and as a collector i'd usually snap stuff like that up. i have a nice collection of white labels and original pressings of the early classic house and acid stuff and when i use my decks those are the tracks i usually play

Yes, I remember it. I think the tipping point was that the Marc Cohn song was a big hit in the US and got a lot of airplay in the UK only a short time before they sampled it. It wasn't like they'd sampled some obscure 60s song no one had heard of, they'd basically nicked the melody and the lyrical theme of a current song without getting clearance from the publishers. Have to say I usually like sampling when it's done well, but I thought that song was rubbish.

I remember that SUAD were on Top of the Pops and because of the legal issues performed a completely different track albeit with the Raving I'm Raving phrase. One of the most bizarre performances (along with the Orb playing chess, Kurt Cobain singing an octave lower and the Manics with IRA baclavas!)

My favourite TOTP performance ever.
