For some reason my Nokia Lumia 820 has started diverting some incoming calls straight to voicemail. The first I know about it is when a "you have missed a call" text or a "new voicemail" notification comes through.
It's not that the volume is turned down, because the text and notification tunes play. Usually.

Does anyone know, please: is this likely to be a phone issue or a provider issue? Provider is O2.

It's getting to be a bit of a bggr when expecting important things like doctor's telephone appointments - if they get straight to voicemail, they don't ring back.

Ta.

likely a provider issue as I had a Lumia 820 on 3 and never had an issue like that,

check on status.o2.co.uk if there is any maintenance in the area

Thankyou for the advice.

I contacted an O2 Guru, who gave me a string of numbers to enter on my phone. When pressed s/he said that the numberstring had extended the length of time the phone would ring before diverting to voicemail.

I'm not convinced, as I can be sitting right next to the phone, waiting for a particular call, and there's no ring at all, just a Missed msg of some kind. We'll see.....

did you check status.o2.co.uk if there is any maintenance going on in your area or the area where you're having the issue?

Have you checked your call divert and voicemail settings? They may just need to be reset. Can you make outgoing calls?

Call forwarding is Off, and I can make outgoing calls.

Completely? If it's off then nobody should ever get your voicemail, only a number cannot be reached message when they can't reach you.

Try the SIM in another phone to see if it's the phone or something else.

If you lock your phone to 2G you will probably be ok, although obviously lose 3G. The Amber Windows Phone Update seems to have stopped 3G working on some devices. Same thing happened on my wife's Nokia 520.

Absolutely right. If an incoming call is going straight to answerphone and not even paging the phone.. then changing the length of time before the "no answer" divert kicks in is not going to make the slightest bit of difference.

Could it be the phone thinks it is already engaged with a call? Have you tried turning it off then on again?

On Windows Phone there's a Call Forwarding toggle which, when on, forwards all calls to voicemail (or another number) without the phone ringing. This is what the OP is saying is off. When it's off, your normal divert settings apply (e.g. divert to voicemail after a certain no. of seconds, etc.).

Thankyou for all the answers. Sorry I've missed some an missed saying thankyou.

I live 15 yards from an O2 mast, and they were in today attending to a fault. They suggested going to 2G, so I'll click on John's links and see if one of them shows me how - I couldn't immediately find a way in the phone.

I've powered down and up several times.
If the 2G option doesn't work, I'll try the SIM in another phone.
Thanks again.

Update - I finally found out how to 2G the phone and all seemed well but it was back to its old diverting tricks again last night. Haven't got another phone that takes the same size sim to try it in, so not quite sure what to do next.

Can you try another SIM in your phone, at least shortly? Swap with a friend, call each other.

Unfortunately I've had a Lumia 820 for a while now and it's the worst phone I've ever had. I was umming and arring about sticking with Nokia after the N8, and should have gone elsewhere.

I have this problem with some calls going straight to answerphone and I've tried everything. Literally everything. It is just one of a mountain of issues I have with this phone.

Should be a sensible idea (so thank you) but the problem is sporadic. I can ask a friend to ring me and it works; five minutes later the problem's back. Thanks anyway.
