Samsung SII upgrade - recommendations?
Hi all,
Im usually at the forefront of keeping upto date with the latest phones out there and what's just around the corner but since getting my Samsung SII TWO years ago I havent really bothered to keep a pace of things. My contract is now up and I have 100% satisfied with the SII. Therefore I can get a free upgrade now and am totally at a loss of what to go for. My only requirement is that is does everything the SII did (im easily pleased!) The quick look around I have had seems to suggest that some newer models have lower rated batteries and some don't come with a SD card slot. As I use my phone as an mp3 player I think utilising the cloud would blow away any internet allowance each month! Im totally open to suggestions. Lee. |

As the Note 3 has usurped it, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 can be snaffled quite cheaply. If you can get used to a 5.5" screen, it's a great phone and will be a familiar experience. I feel the S3 was a bit too fragile and would skip that for the S4 if you don't fancy a Note - with the S5 around the corner, the S4 could get cheaper over Christmas/New Year. So what size are you comfortable with? How much space does your mp3 collection take up? I'm loving the Nexus 5 and got the 32GB version to ensure my music was accommodated as it has no external storage. A great device for the money. As is the absurdly cheap yet powerful Moto G which sadly only goes up to 16GB. The LG G2, HTC One and Sony Z are all worth a look too once you've bottomed out your budget/requirements - I'd recommend wandering into a phone shop and getting up close and personal with all of these models. And the Samsung Mega 6.3 if you fancy a mammoth phone. If you pushed me, I'd say the Nexus 5 if you can live with the lack of SD card or wait for the S4 to drop if you can't. Get the 16GB Moto G if you want to save a fortune (you could always buy an MP3 player as well and still have change!). |

Thanks for that Sloth - I usually get my upgrade 6 months before the current one ends but I cant believe ive let this one lapse and go past the 2 year period!
Im never too worried about budget but never want to pay iphone prices! Ive just been reading though some online reviews and im leaning towards the HTC One and LG G2. Neither have sd slots but then that seems commonplace with ALL the new phones out atm ![]() I rarely carry a bag and so always carry my phone in my pocket or shirt pocket so don't think I want to go upto Galaxy Note sizes (Ive got a tablet for such larger usage) I will take a visit to my local phone shop to have a play with the models and see what I think. The only model I cant find much detail on is the Nexus 5 - is this exclusive to a certain retailer? Thanks. Lee. |

The Nexus 5 was launched October 31st and can be bought directly from Google Play but the 32GB version may be scarce as it was very popular. CPW may have some on contract deals (had a few SIM free but no longer I understand). BTW when I said Sony Xperia Z earlier, I meant the Z1 - that DOES have a MicroSD slot so is worth a look too. |

Just been reading LOADS of reviews of the LG G2 and it sounds amazing. Ive been really impressed with the photos and video from it and 3000mha battery!
I appreciate no sd slot and really bizarre volume control but everything else seems to be amazing! The HTC ONE looks much sexier mind!

And after reading the reviews of the HTC One im totally undecided. I do like the thought of summat slightly smaller in my pocket and sexier looking. Photos looks of an equivalent quality and battery life only marginally smaller!
OO decisions! |

Have a look at the Nokia 925 or 1020, and have a play with the Windows OS, different but you might like it.

I just bought the HTC One and it's a great phone. I had a Nokia Lumia 800 for two years which I loved but I found that the apps I use most often on my iPad weren't there so it was a choice between iPhone and android. I tried the iPhone for a couple of weeks but didn't really like it (although I love my iPad??) I really wanted something with a decent sized screen but not too big. I read loads of reviews and had a play with a few phones before deciding on the HTC One and so far, I've only had it a few days, I'm sure I made the right decision.
