There seems to be some airbrushing of history. He made a couple of attempts to 'break' America, with Sammy Davis Jr's support, and went down like a lead balloon.

Me doesn't - some do, some don't, some did once but think he's past it now - all real world views. Not everyone thinks like you do Tel - live with it.
I don't dislike Bruce, but I don't find his jokes funny and prefer the show when Tess and Claudia present it - my personal preference.
However, I do think he's delusional if he thinks he should be seen as a singer, dancer, actor etc.
That shuffle he does at the beginning of the show, while sprightly for a man in his 80's, is not dancing. And the less said about his singing voice the better.
He is a reasonably good presenter (I appreciate forum views differ wildly on this, so I'll try to be neutral!) but I do get the impression he thinks an awful lot of himself and gets frustrated with some of the general public for not thinking equally as highly of him.

From the producers point of view, if & when Bruce goes is the time for major changes.
New judges etc.
Easiest change short term would be to move one of the judges to presenting - Len would be ideal - or Craig.
Less of the funnies - more involvement in group dance/ opening number maybe.
If both Len and Bruce want to go then - to keep familiar faces - move Craig out as Host - give Tess more to do and have new two judges like the Jordans (who are popular and familiar and James would relish the "baddie" role) or Anton and Erin or even Flavia and Vincent.
X-Factor is going to have to go through big changes as Barlow and Walsh are going - possible all 4 current judges will not be in place for 2014 - so this is the ideal time to revamp Strictly.

Bruce turned his back on the BBC for the big money ITV were offering for Bruce to show he was more than a gameshow host. He fell flat on his face and ended up presenting gameshows again.
Karen Hardy should have been a judge before now. Bruce can't go on forever. I don't mind him, but his status means he is allowed to carry on.

While I don;t think hosting live telly is rocket science, it is a skill. I don't think you can just put Craig of Len at the helm of the Beeb's premier Saturday night show and let them cut their presenter teeth in front of 9 million people 
. Even Anton's little bit of presenting doesn't add up to much and it wasn't live (not that I want him to do it, anyway). Tess and Claudia are both experienced presenters and familiar faces on the show - I can't see any reason to bring anyone else in (well, unless it's Graham Norton 
).

Me four. Seems a bit technical overload this year with both Karen and Ian talking about specific dance steps.
Preferred her when she talked about the actual choreography.

After 70 years of entertaining the public, the presenter says he has no desire to leave TV screens and retirement is a way off.

Brilliant.......and I totally agree.
I don't hate the man, but I do dislike him for reasons I wont elaborate on here and the sooner he is gone the better imo.

I quite like her in that role, but that is where she should stay.

I don't think he could get much work in America. He's not funny or charming and he has no stage presence. He wouldn't be invited to appear on a show and definitely not host one. He needs to accept his limitations and go out with some dignity.
He's hanging on to Strictly "like grim death."
He knows it's his last job in television.
His performances on Strictly over the last few years, is enough to put off any other network producer.
He's in the classic situation that many older people in the same job for years, find themselves.
If they had to re-apply for it, they wouldn't get it.

The issue is not has he declined, it's can he still pull it off. I think he can. Secondly a little bit of age related tolerance wouldn't go amiss.
