PVR9300T and HD

I'm about to buy a new TV which will be HD and probably have 3D as well. But I don't want to buy a new PVR if I don't have to. Info I've seen about the PVR9300T says it can "upscale" to HD. I don't know what this means - is it true HD or does it only record the standard, non-HD channels and just display them a bit better?

Do I need to do anything to the PVR to upgrade it?
And I can't spot any HD channels in the channel list.

So I'm wondering whether it can't do true HD.

The 9300 can only record in SD. The upscaling just means that it can convert the SD to HD (by interpolating between the pixels) and sending it through an HDMI lead to the HD TV.

The result is OK, but a bit 'soft' compared to true HD.

Actually if you send SD to an HD TV the latter will upscale it for you - possibly better than the 9300 can (provided the TV you buy has a SCART socket - some don't or require you to buy an adaptor).

To record HD you will require an HD PVR, such as the Humax HDR-2000T or the older Humax HDR-FOX T2.

Thanks for replying so quickly.

One fairly major thing that prevents a 9300 seeing the HD channels and also makes it nigh on impossible to upgrade it, is the different transmission system used by the HD channels.

The only way a 9300 could possibly see the HD channels is via fairly serious surgery on the electronics. Something that is probably impossible to do.
