Sophie is a pretty girl, she tried her best. Brendan outdanced her. Such a shame.

My favourite dance of the night. The dress was lovely too. Totally disagreed with the judges and gave 4 of my 5 on-line votes to them.

I enjoyed Sophie's and Abbeys dances by far the most, i thought it was a beautiful subtle rumba.

An absolute gem of a dance - beautiful, elegant, romantic.

The subtleties Brendan choreographs are a joy.

Have to agree with you 100%.

I really think there is a lot of undermarking going on. Hope Sophie gets to the final.

It was a lovely dance.

But technically (hip-sway) was it a rumba? Exactly the same dance WITH hip-sway would have been rumba. It would have looked more erotic/exotic/suggestive with the hip-sway.

Without it Sophie looked contemporary dance/balletically lovely. But not technically a rumba.

So the judges were right to mark it down but not for the reasons they gave which were too simplistic.

The problem with the judges comments, though is that they are pushed for time, have the audience cheering/booing/clapping/grumbling over them as well as Bruce sticking his oar in. The reasons have to be simplistic due to time constraints and sound-biteability for recapping later.

Yes, but Darcey and Bruno are always standing up and giving it some.

Why they can't stand up and show hip-sway I don't know. They throw their arms about readily enough.

It's just the silly SCD short-hand - rumba is raunchy. No. Rumba has hip-sway over the standing leg which can be interpreted as raunchy because most people don't go round doing that and it is sexually suggestive.

But that doesn't equal raunchy. Or more accurately doesn't HAVE TO EQUAL raunchy. Sophie's dance did need to incorporate it but was a lovely dance without it thought not rumba.

She looked beautiful and graceful, as she always does, but it didn't feel like a Rumba to me. I agree with the judges about the emotional connection.

I agree. Compare this rhumba with that performed by Kara and Artem. Not raunchy, but beautifully sensual and flowing.

That's exactly it, postit.

Sensuality. That's what the hips give the dance. Sophie didn't have that. She was beautifully balletic and, as a free-dance, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sensuality doesn't have to be (Craig's favourite words) filthy and sordid.

I did look back and see hip action and she pushed off through her feet

I was watching and she didn't do it properly at all. She was not grounded, she didn't dance from her feet. She had no groundedness and no push and thus no hip action.

You can continue to say she had, but I'm afraid even if she did it 'a bit' (which I didn't see) she didn't do it properly or enough, otherwise it would have looked like a Rhumba and not an airy, pleasant little contemporary dance number.

And that's what it looked like, and that's why many of those that 'don't like rhumba' liked it, and that's why it was called 'romantic' and 'demure' and all the other stuff.

It was nice.

It was not a good rhumba, however.
What name??

She is always beautiful and elegant but that didn't translate into a good rumba.

Perhaps that explains why I enjoyed it. If it wasn't a rhumba I mean.

I hate rumba and I liked Sophie's dance so there's another one.

She is so AIRY-fairy!

I'm going to have to bring Jill Halfpenny into this. There's a woman who could give it some welly without making you think she was auditioning for a lap-dancing club. But if you want "into the floor" you don't need to look much further than Jill.

I spoke to my 'amazing" dance teacher it could have been a bit more but it was there

The audience reaction shows that the judges were not marking fairly. It was beautiful.

Swap Susanna for Abbey and you get the line up I would like to see in the final.
