You don't need to buy the rights to play a song or tune. You can play anything you like as long as you pay the royalty fee to the PRS.

There are a LOT of trad music choices out there - you clearly just don't know all of them (not surprisingly), you're exhibiting the same mentality that instantly thinks that all Viennese waltzes will have to be danced to The Blue Danube, which of course is rubbish, as not only did the Strausses write a lot more music than just that one piece, there are a lot more composers than just Strauss.

As for being repetitive, they're already repetitive, we're hearing the same tunes over different series, with the same dire consequences for the viewer.

The music tonight was abyssmal, terrible, and very very unfair on the dancers. They need to put the music choosing producers on whatever the costume department have been taking this year.

I don't think anyone is saying that every song has to be a piece that is classically associated with a particular dance, just that the music should be suited to a dance. There are modern songs that work really well for certain routines but like we saw yesterday, some that just don't.

Hell, just leave the music choices up 100% to the pros and I'll take the good with the bad...but this method now where some pros strike it lucky while others are being forced to choreograph with such a disadvantage is unfair.

To me, as an amateur, I think authentic music would help you get into the character of the dance a lot more e.g. proper tango music or Rihanna? To me there is absolutely no contest, the proper music will help the amateur dancer 'feel' the dance and can only help their performance surely? It's OK for the professionals, they should be able to turn the dances on and off like a tap by now but it's not the same for the celebs and if you're doing a dance like the tango, argentine tango or charleston in particular I think it stands to reason you need authentic music. Plus IMO these dances just look better with the right music.”

I disagree that traditional music always works better, sometimes a modern track can help provide an absolutely stunning performance.
You only have to look at Mark & Karen's Argentine Tango to Goldeneye to see how good modern music can work to give that little bit of the wow factor to a routine.

I thought it was a great vocal. I'm in the minority on this thread though.

I had no problem with the singers at all, it was the music choices themselves which were absolute crap!

They (sorry, but especially the female singer) overpowered the dancers, and completely spoiled the show.

When singing for dancers they need to remember its the dancers who should have centre stage, and attract the attention .”

Er, you do realise that it's the BBC sound engineers and NOT the singers who control the relative volume of the different bits of the band in the broadcast? And what the singers are hearing will be their foldback mix and NOT what is going out "front of house". So they probably have no idea there's anything wrong. And even if they did realise and "sang a bit quieter", the sound engineers could then just turn them up some more!

Blame singers for being out of tune, out of time, harsh-voiced or just plain wrong for the song (though all of those may be tech issues too!). But please don't blame them for relative volume in the mix because that ISN'T their fault!

How do the producers decide who gets what music as the choice of Paso music last week, we had one great and very appropriate choice and then one dire choice. It's clearly not fair on who gets the dire choice which in this instance was Ashley. Maybe the producers are just so thick they don't realise how important the music is

Completely agree. I thought Ashley's Paso was far, far superior and he didn't get the marks to match it.

And now, who can what explain or define "traditional", "authentic" or "contemporary" music is in the context of Latin or Ballroom dancing?

I don't know who chooses the music, I'd like to see/hear proof of this, like real evidence.

What I do understand is time signature, tempo and rhythm and all of these are factors in what makes an appropriate choice for a dance. Someone or some people are making those decisions and I somehow doubt it will be the choreographers. If it is them, then OMG

One of the female vocalists is shocking, her voice reminds me that I need to make that call to the tree surgeon.........her voice is like a saw week in week out.

The music for this week was mostly terrible. The music for Natalie's Tango was esp bad nothing wrong with a modern song but it was a mess!
