‘EastEnders’ announces plans to introduce two new families
Two new families shall be joining the show in the coming months as the Dawson and Desai families make their arrival on Albert Square. The characters and their backstories, along with the identity of those playing them, are below.

DAWSON FAMILY BACKGROUND: OVERVIEW: It all started in the late eighties when fresh faced schoolboy Jamie Dawson became infatuated with the 'new girl', Lisa Watkins. Their romance peaked in 1988, when Jamie lost his virginity to Lisa - only for her to discover that she was pregnant with his child. With her parents threatening to shun her unless she proved she had a stable life ahead of her, Lisa and Jamie married in early 1989 - months after their seventeenth birthdays. Their first child, Will came along in February of that year. Life for the young couple was hard, although with the newly found support of Lisa's parents they managed to get through it: until 1992, when Lisa found that she was expecting again. A baby girl, Kimberley, was born just days after Christmas. Once again, despite tears and tantrums, the couple plowed through it. When Lisa found out she was to have a third child in 1994, the couples relationship was pushed to breaking point, rectified by the birth of their third and final child Robbie in January 1995. The coming years saw their diaries overflow with dentist appointments, parents' evenings and the like, with the couple rarely receiving any time for themselves. Life continued as normal until 2012, when Lisa believed that she was pregnant with their fourth child - however, what she believed to be the signs of pregnancy were actually signs of cervical cancer, which she was diagnosed with. The doctor's told the couple that they would be offering Lisa palliative care and she tragically passed away in their family home in May 2013. Each member of the family has found their own way to deal with her passing, both constructive and destructive.

JAMIE DAWSON (ED STOPPARD): Jamie has been deeply affected by the loss of his wife Lisa, as he had grown up beside his soulmate. Lisa's death has left him a shadow of his former self, his charming nature replaced by one filled with feelings of morose and self pity. He moves his family to Albert Square with hopes for a fresh start, although he realises it will take more than a new home and a lick of paint in order to ease the pain that Lisa's death has inflicted upon him. Jamie remains in contact with Lisa's parents but the relationship he holds with them is fractured. Life on Albert Square will likely be a welcome distraction from his unresolved feelings for his deceased wife, although whether he will survive the loves and losses Albert Square will present him with is another question.

WILL DAWSON (ALEX ROE): As the eldest child of Jamie and Lisa, Will has the largest collection of memories of his mother. This has proved to be a blessing and a curse for him as he grieves over her passing, as he reflects upon the harsh words that he witnessed her exchange with his father over the years. Being the oldest sibling, Will has the strongest connection to his father, although Will's knowledge over the darker moments in Jamie's relationship with Lisa is likely to push them both to breaking point...

KIMBERLEY DAWSON (FREYA MAVOR): Charmed with her mother's good looks, Kimberley's continued presence in the now predominantly male Dawson household stirs up bad memories for all of the Dawson men. The striking resemblance she shares to her mother has proved all too much for her father on numerous occasions, which has left Kimberley feeling alone in her grief time and time again. She's bound to break a few hearts on Albert Square - but how quickly will her own broken heart mend itself?

ROBBIE DAWSON (TOM LEACH): The 'baby' of the family, his mother's illness and eventual death affected his exam results heavily, so he has now given up on his dreams of going to university. His grandparents have repeatedly told him that Lisa would be furious if she knew that Robbie had thrown his bright future away but Robbie has continuously stated that the time he spent with his mother, which then affected his studying time, is far more precious than a few letters on a piece of paper.

The Dawson family shall arrive on-screen in January 2014 and shall start filming early next month.

DESAI FAMILY BACKGROUND: The Desai siblings have had a tough few years as they have been forced into the realisation that despite the substantial changes to the world we now live in, racial prejudice still exists. Eldest sibling Samir was the first to realise how callous people can be when the newsagents that he ran alongside his father, Baasit was targeted in the 2011 riots. As the shop was looted as his father lay injured, Samir struggles to forgive himself for the trauma as his father had taken his shift in order for Samir to attend the party of one of his closest friends. Middle child Hira immediately rejected her father's proposal that they move back to Cyprus to start their lives afresh, stating that she has spent all but two years of her life in the United Kingdom and she intends to spend many more here. Youngest child Vik was born in the UK and tragically, the siblings' mother passed away in childbirth. With their father now living in Cyprus, Samir and Hira often wonder what life would be like if their mother was still alive. Vik has no memory of the woman that his elder brother and sister often describe, which has led him down a very dark path..

SAMIR DESAI: (SACHA DHAWAN): Samir has a desire to control the actions of his siblings, a quality of which stems from the tough relationship that Samir shared with his father in the run-up to the London riots. Samir will stop at no lengths to keep Hira and Vik out of trouble - although his efforts with Vik have come at a cost. When Hira announced her plans to move to Walford in order to break away from the mundanity of her former home, Samir and Vik decided to follow. Samir shall be keeping a watchful eye over Hira's new business: but how far can he keep her from doing her own thing?

HIRA DESAI: (AMBER ROSE REVAH): Described by many as 'instinctive', Hira is keen to start a new chapter in her life. However, with her brother's joining her in Walford she is well aware that breaking away from her former life will be harder than she first thought. Nevertheless, Hira will welcome the company and familiarity her brother's provide. Her relationship with both brother's can go either way as she often clashes with Samir over their views on life, in addition to her constant disagreements with her younger brother Vik on his actions.

VIK DESAI: (NIKESH PATEL): Vik's teenage rebellion still sticks in the mind of his family, despite the fact that it took place over a decade ago. He has often been tempted to return to the lifestyle of drink and drugs although his love for his family is too strong for him to risk putting them through that again. The one thing that Vik desires is to be loved by Samir and Hira for who he is although he still feels as though he is an outcast in the family due to the fact his birth was the catalyst for his mother's death.

Hira Desai shall make her EastEnders debut before the end of the year. Samir and Vik shall join her in Walford in early January.

Thanks Queenie, I wasn't going to start a new one for a while but I think the show is in a better place at the moment so I can carry on from there rather than scrapping everything and starting afresh.
