He's actually extremely underrated artistically in my opinion and writes pop brilliant songs that are funny, moving, catchy, unusual and quite varied stylistically. He has a wide range of musical influences and is one of the few modern musicians who understands what you can do with pop music and uses it properly. And yes, just because he tends to write with other people, it doesn't mean he's not talented and capable of writing songs himself.”

i agree, this thread is a joke, albeit not a particularly amusing joke for anyone other than the easily amused. some of the comments here are actually quite offensive and the people that have offered opinions, have presented them as if they are facts.

but whatever, i bought the album last week and i enjoyed the record. congratulations, robbie.

Only decent thing he ever did was Could it be Magic and that was a Mannilow cover”

Right so where are all top hits by Guy Chambers since he parted ways with Robbie in 2002....lol they are just not there......

How come the style and lyrics to Take That's album changed so dramatically when he came on board for Progress? Enough for them to win a Best Group award at the Brits... He wrote the lyrics to The Flood and Eight Letter. Go past the singles released which are aimed at the mass market like Rock DJ or Candy etc....the album songs are so personal and witty and sad and honest ...thats why his fans connect with him...its not songs written by committee...its his life. There is such a great song in the midst of his last album Take The Crown called- Into the Silence...try and listen to that if you get the chance then hear Swings Both Ways the duet with Rufus Wainwright....

Oh and style over substance.....you can't string that for 20+ years and get away with it, you'd disappear within 3 years, 5 if you're lucky and where popular. You cant match Elvis's record of 11 no.1 albums, or shift 2 million concert tickets like he did last year 20 + years on...

Kiss (like Robbie) are proof that you can actually live off style over substance for decades quite easily.

Go Gentle by Robbie Williams is my fave song in the current top 40. A very strong melody and wonderful orchestration. One of the best pop songs of the year, I reckon.

"Go gentle through your life.."

Well, whether or not he is any good is all down to opinion.

For me, when he's at his best, he's VERY good. At all other times, he's no better than anyone else in particular.

My enduring problem with him is he obviously thinks he's consistently VERY good, even when he's not at all. And I have always found his "oh I am poor tortured Robbie, please excuse my pompous ass behaviour because, in actual fact, I have terribly low self-esteem" act to be extremely annoying.

I support Robbie when (a) he's at the top of his game and (b) he's not being horribly unlikeable. Unfortunately, for me at least, he's hardly ever both at once these days.

Yes, they are the only people who buy his music.

Tell me about it he really is the most unlikeable person in music who somehow manages to consistently sell albums.

His voice is extremely average nothing special to it whatsoever unlike the likes of John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, George Michael etc (now those are male artists who deserved to be on top Williams can't touch them with a fifty foot bargepole)

Oh for god sake...the music world has been filled with commercial successes that no one can explain. It doesn't make it good unless you purely judge music by bloody MONEY, which I hope no one does.

People can slate him all they want, Go Gentle is quite a track with gorgeous orchestration.

It's like when people slate Michael Jackson and then you tell them to listen to Thriller. That will shut them up! Ultimately, it's the music that counts and endures. The personality of the singer is less important.

I find it stranger that you can't see how someone can be successful when you don't like them.

I just find him unbelievably irritating (it was the same during his TT days first time round) and he comes across as an altogether unpleasant character. I know he will argue that it is all about his Robbie persona and Bob Williams the real guy is nothing like that, but still. Mind you I was a Gary fan until he sold out to be a judge on the X Factor. He irritates me more than Williams does at the moment and his new single is far worse than the Robster's.

Best Robbie moment ever for me was his Glasto solo performance back in the late 90's. He looked good, he was over his initial booze issues and it was just before Angels came out. Have just You Tubed it. He was almost rather fanciable...
